  1. Actually, denton, I was responding to dave’s post about the shootings, though I stand by what I say. I’m just not sure why this debate, as usual, has to devolve into ad hominem attacks.

  2. Exactly, ishtar. “Reasonable middle class people” re-elected George W. Bush, so by the force of cmu’s logic he must be a great president.

Oh wait, except I’m sure by “reasonable” he means people who agree with him.

  3. steelers/ravens game should be a real grip n grin. jets/patriots will be heartbreaking.

shooter was obsessed with g gifford and unhinged over many things, including grammer. tragedy that he acted like god and savagely took 6 lives. He chose shotting as a MO, but could have chosen many other tactics to get same result.

  4. “I think stronger regs act as a filter and can reduce the odds or the damage. For example, it would have been nice if his psychiatric issues formed some kind of barrier between him and his gun”

This was exactly my point, Slopey. As I recall, there was a similar issue with the Virginia Tech shooter, who also had documented psychiatric problems.

  5. “If reasonable, middle-class people can be so virulently anti-gun-control (as evidenced, say, on this site), clearly there’s something that needs to be changed.”

Wrong. “reasonable, middle-class people can be so viruelently” anti-anything, but that doesn’t mean the stance is based on sound evidence.

  6. “lechecal, please don’t spout your own ‘horse shit’, I know you like to do so, but there’s a time & place.”

cmu, if there’s a time and a place, maybe you should talk to CGar not jackal. It was Cgar who first brought up the gun issue. Or is it OK to bring up the gun issue as long as it’s on your side?

  7. BHS, as usual the press is full of mis-information about the technical issues of guns. And so are most New Yorkers.

There was no restriction on the number of rounds in a pistol until the Colin Fergeuson (sp) LIRR shooting. After that, some states, but not all, passed a law that limited the number of rounds to ten. Those were STATE laws not federal.

The law did not address, however, the number of guns already in existence that had provision for more rounds, nor were they made illegal. Of course this did cause a rise in their price, since scarcity = higher prices. And of course technically there are ways around the law.

So, this nut could have had a pre-ban gun, or bought in a state with no restrictions. Or he could have altered the gun, not hard to do.

the idiot journalist who talked about the law expiring, probably was confusing this law with the so-called ‘assault rifle’ ban, which was put on the Federal books and then expired.
