“OK, but someday you won’t be there to “steer him back in the right direction”, and he will not have developed the instincts and patterns that will get him there on his own.”
I think you’ve read too many blogs where the son’s hands are steered towards the mothers breasts.
It’s my understanding that basically all the prep school parents write their kids college essays. Why don’t the colleges make the kids sign honor codes with their applications?
“I never do my son’s homework for him or give him an answer, but I do try to steer him back in the right direction when I see his messing something up.”

Totally agree w/ rob about teamwork assignments. O.K. by the time you’re in grad school at Kellogg but not in el-hi. And helping w/ homework until 6th or 7th grade is fine so long as it’s confined to making sure it’s getting done & answering specific questions or clarifying something. I also track to see if a kid understands a given concept & get him to look again at things he’s gotten wrong to see if he were just sloppy & too hurried or if he really doesn’t “get it”.
This is somewhat embarrassing, but I got my MBA at University of Alabama at Birmingham.
I was living in Birmingham and my company paid for it.
It took me 2 years of going to classes 2 nights a week.

“hmmm, a bit hypocritical coming from you, no?”
Not at all. Cooperation doesn’t necessarily mean being nice.
teamwork is for the weak. sorry, but it’s true.
you’re born alone and you die alone. screw the people who get in the way in the middle.

Avoiding cooperation with others is extremely self-limiting over the long term.
