  1. That’s certainly true, lech. My early work was: toy dept. of a dept. store; cleaning riding stables & teaching riding; writing mandatory chapel speeches at prep school (25 cents for a daily & 50 for a Sunday.)

  2. “I wasn’t rude & obviously listened to input from the client but I was pretty adamant about my recommendations.”

Doesn’t mean you weren’t constantly operating within a web of human relationships.

Very different from dragging trees out of the woods by yourself.

  3. “BHScott, you just sound like a snobby nerd with an inferiority complex…”

I’m sure there is some truth in that, but I at least try to to be self-aware about it. Of course, claimed self-awareness is probably also part of the stereotype, so I can’t win.

In the University of Alabama system, Birmingham was considered to be the 2nd tier school for most majors (including business), behind the main campus in Tuscaloosa.

I do like SEC football, but I am a LSU Tigers fan.
I grew up in Baton Rouge, and both of my parents graduated from LSU. My dad had season tickets for several years.

  4. My daughter had a lot of homework in elementary school, and has a lot of homework in high school. Less so in middle school. She was a weak writer–it’s still not her strong point, but in 4th grade, she had a dragon-lady teacher (from Guangzhou) who made her write and write and write. And lo and behold, she came out of it a much better writer.

I think it’s foolish to think that kids will learn basic math concepts without a lot of practice = homework. Sure it’s boring, but after the 100th 3-digit addition problem in a week, you are much more likely to know what 7 + 8 is without even thinking about it. And then you can go onto more interesting stuff.
