  1. lol just saw this on gothamist. damnit, i need to borrow 11217’s long blonde wig!

Will it happen to you? Tonight’s mega Mega Millions lottery has a pot of $330 million, and a Bronx spiritualist has predicted a woman from New York will win! The prediction comes from Chris Ochun, who also noted that the woman (probably a Gemini) will have to split the money with “someone from out of state.” According to the NY Post, he used snail shells to find out that some lucky numbers are “5, 6, 52, 55, 44 and 27″—though those aren’t necessarily the winning numbers. We are not snail shell experts, but maybe this means ladies should pick up their tickets at a bodega on one of these streets?

  2. How about this dream meeting: Chomsky and Chevez!

    http://venezuelanalysis.com/news/4748

    And more:

Chomsky said that he would not choose to use the same harsh oratory, but added that the Venezuelan leader was simply expressing the views of many in the world. And he said Chavez’s anger was understandable.

“The Bush administration backed a coup to overthrow his government,” he said. “Suppose Venezuela supported a military coup that overthrew the government of the United States? Would we think it was a joke?”

Proving that he was still up for a lively debate, Chomsky then went on to talk about income inequality in Latin America, the history of the United Nations, Iraq, Iran, Fidel Castro and, finally, the man who so fervently admires him, Chavez.

“I have been quite interested in his policies,” Chomsky said. “Personally, I think many of them are quite constructive.” Most important, he said, Chavez seems to have the overwhelming support of the people in his country. “He has gone through six closely supervised elections,” he said.

  3. “I just can’t stand seeing Bush, Rove, Cheney and their cronies puttering around living the good life. They’re nothing short of mass murderers.”

Do you feel the same way about soldiers that kill multiple people in the line of duty?

I mean, the intelligence/motivation may have turned out to be wrong, but there were (some) proper channels taken before the wars started.

  4. DCB That lust remark was while he was running, not once he was in office. And at the same time Ford had Eliz. Taylor at the White House & said his thoughts were pure as the driven snow but banged his head against the door of the helicopter as he bid her adieu. I’d rather have someone who’s in touch w/ his feelings than one in such denial.

  5. cooking question
    Bisques
Any way to make a (shirpm; losbster; seafood) bisque without alcohol. All the recipes I’m finding have either sherry or brandy. Can I just leave it out?

  6. Jackal — I am just working off of benson’s list and pointing out counterexamples, not proposing my own worst 5. I think it is probably difficult to compare pols active during our lifetimes with those we only know from history books.

My point is largely that benson gives a lot of weight to rhetoric and power projection. That’s how his scorecard works. I disgree with his choices but that is largely because I disagree somewhat with his criteria. If we all argue from our own criteria without revealing our criteria, I think it is a useless exercise.

For me, I would be looking for spectacular failures. I also wouldn’t limit myself to NY pols and US presidents. I probably would limit myself to last half of 20th century. I would probably also limit myself to execs rather than legislators, except for those in real leadership positions, but the flameout would have to have been spectacular (Gingrich?) Client 9 is certainly a candidate for my list. Don’t know yet if Bush would be — I would have to think about who the other candidates might be. Nixon (for the constitutional crisis and deeply crazy governance by paranoia, regardless of whatever else he did — again, my criteria)? Wilson Goode? Agnew? Faubus? This could go in a lot of directions.

  7. “The president is supposed to give everybody a woody about being American and stuff. Reagan was super good at that. Carter sucked.”
For me it’s the exact opposite – I was most unhappy & embarrassed about being American when Nixon, Reagan & Bush II were in office.
