  1. Re the issue to “corn subsidies”, this is coming up actually. We are reevaluationg a 6 billion ethanol excise tax credit subsidy for the already mandated ethanol industry. Which by the way consumes 40% of the corn produced in this country. This will shift the allocation of farm acreage in the US and will also probably affect another asset bubble in this country….the price of farmland. Right now, midwestern farmers are the new rich, falling over themselves with money from the increase in export sales and high prices due to world wide crop disasters, not to mention meat eating Chinese.
Those Chinese animals need to be fed and they are buying US grain in spades.

  2. DeLepp,

That is wise advice. Some folks we know are in the middle of applying for 1-2 year programs in medical fields.
They are a married couple in their 40’s. The wife worked in fashion and the husband was an entrepeneur, both well educated. He went to Berkley.
Not sure how they’re funding it, perhaps savings or relatives.

  3. DCB- I have been leaning on friends and that’s how some of the freelance work comes in. My parents are dead- no moving back home for me. It’s seems rather silly to complain about the extension of unemployment in this economy yet want to keep the tax cuts when so much money could be brought in with their lapse. Not to be unsympathetic to the plight of people making 250,000+ a year, but all things considered, that’s like crying with a loaf of bread in your mouth. And I am still paying taxes- I have them taken out of unemployment. So don’t worry- I’m still contributing.

  4. dh,
I have been meaning to ask the same question on the forum this week!
Definitely have to give tips to folks that have been useful to you. Not to asbolutely everyone necessarily. there are only 6 staff in my building so will give something to everyone in my case.
I have no idea about amounts though. Always gave something when I lived in larger rental buildings but think I was probably on the low end of the range…

  5. bxgrl, these are rough times. I know this is only anecdotely(sp?) but friends and family that have found jobs just competely switch careers to keep going. Time to lean hard on friends. A friend just sold her house and moved back in with Mom at 48 to start new career. She feels like a 25 year old moving home after college.

  6. Before I post a question on the forum – let me ask you mofos:

Holiday tips for building staff. NYC myth? Necessity? How much? There’s a small army that works in my building so giving them all money would definitely suck. There are a few standouts tho. WHat you guys think?
