  1. DCB- I agree this country needs to reinvent itself and more importantly it needs to stop tearing itself in half and everyone shut up, sit down and work on viable, real solutions. The 2 party system is killing us. Give Presidents line by line vetos on earmarks and pork barrel legislation and stop holding progress hostage to political posturing.

Extending unemployment isn’t solving the problem- that was never its intent. It was intended as a lifeline for workers who were productive members of the economy and now need help. That money gets spent so as many people have pointed out, unemployment money goes right back into the economy.

  2. I haven’t had a regular secretary since I started at my new job (rotating cast of tems so far) so I don’t have to give a sec’y gift, which is usually my biggest holiday expense.

I have a xmas truce with the wife. We don’t buy each other stuff because basically that’s just us buying ourselves stuff and what’s the point.

So that leaves $5 for the WSJ delivery guy and xmas pressies for kids and inlaws.

  3. DH,
Your new year’s resolution should be to open your own door from now on.
That way you can avoid all this trouble next year.

re: Tip jars in the most ridiculous places.
It is not acceptable to put out a jar anywhere.
One can understand a tip jar in an establishment where food is prepared, to a certain extent.

On the counter in a 99cent store?
Biatch, if the person had change to spare, they wouldn’t be shopping in that rat hole!

  4. “I tipped Super and Doormen $100 each and the “workers” $20. Yes, you need to do it.”

DIBS, I have a feeling that not all of the tips you gave related exclusively to conventional services provided.

  5. haha delepp – for sure!!

“Definitely have to give tips to folks that have been useful to you. ”

yeah – there’s one doorman and one handyman who have been particularly useful, so i don’t feel bad about giving them each 100 bucks or so. the other guys are all pretty good tho, just not standouts.

ooof – very difficult (especially since i’m a chronic over-tipper in all situations that require it)

  6. Biff, tipping at dry cleaners??!!! I tip well at parking lots where rate is cheap or covered by corresponding establishment I’m visiting. not so when I get raped with a massive parking charge.

  7. I’m checking into going back to school. I applied for a teaching fellowship program for science teachers since I minored it that and love it. Won’t hear back for about 6 weeks. They’ll pay for it- only way I can afford to go back. Meantime I read up on lessons and tutorials in my field- arty and design. Teaching myself more software and suchto up my qualifications.
