  1. M4L, I don’t tip the dry cleaners upon every visit, but I’ve tipped them during holiday season if I’ve used them consistently and like them. I never really know exactly whom one is supposed to tip in New York. Seems like some people tip just about everyone they deal with in their everyday life.

To me, the absolute mandatory tips/gifts during the holidays are apartment doorman / super / staff, admin assistants and your kids’ teachers. Pretty much the key people you need to rely on.

  2. Just for the record, i haven’t made anywhere near $250,000 for a few years now. I’m for the tax cuts to be extended up to maybe $750,000 or so. After that, people can afford more taxes but just don’t let it get out of hand.

The reality of all of this is that the wealth effect of the stock market is what will benefit the economy, not the tax cuts.

  3. “DH,
Your new year’s resolution should be to open your own door from now on.
That way you can avoid all this trouble next year.”

haha – they don’t even open the door! (it’s a revolving door)

  4. Bxgrl, Have you considered teaching as a substitute in the city schools? With a science degree you probably have a leg up. Also, you could work on more credentials at the same time.

I have so many friends who are forced to regroup and it is really brutal. One friend in publishing (and very shy finance person) is having a killer time figuring out what to do next, but I think she is turning a temp gig into a full time one. Another friend terrified of being laid off a paper pub sales job. Same deal. I have had a number of lawyer friends also regrouping. And a bunch of financial industry people who were spit out in the 2008 meltdown and are not situated properly yet! It is TOUGH and there is no denying that!!!

Same with me. My industry has changed so much – what I have now is not a good situation longer term and need to think through a new path, probably within this industry but it is challenging.

  5. “are those tip jar $$$ communal – ie to be shared among the whole crew or just the cashier gets it”

when i worked at starbucks i would get about an extra $100 a week cash from those tip jars.
