  1. I bet your fighting fish get into a lot of roes, biff.

ringo, rob, etc. — I’m totally out of date, techwise, so I don’t know which of those devices get me how far to my goal and with how much content or at what price for the content. I can look up all of those things, but I’m looking for advice as to the best way to go about this. Would love to hear from folks who’ve gone this route and what they have and have not liked.

  2. slopey, first you need to decide plasma vs. LCD. Each has its advantages, but too much to write. Size depends on variety of things but mainly viewing distance. I think 50″ about the sweetspot right now.

Get rid of the antique DVD/VCR and get an Oppo Bluray player which will also play and disc out there from BluRay to SACD.

Get a home theater receive to run it all thru and get 5 speakers plus a subwoofer. Since it’s your house you can put them in the wall.

Of course you need the network connections to stream…

We’re gonna buy a similar setup for a relative for under 2k with some cheaper stuff, could do pretty good quality for 3k.

I don’t have cable or watch TV but I don’t see why you couln’t stream some form of Ch13 off the internet, that is if it’s offered.

Feel free to come buy if you want to see what we have.

  3. I’m not a sociologist or even a social studies teacher….but I think cannot talk about hypergentrification of some ‘hoods in NYC and not place in context of growing divide between upper income people and the middleclass/workingclass/poor.
These areas are partial byproduct of all gains in income of past 20 years going to top 10% of earners.

They are plenty of examples in nyc that generation/or 2 ago were middle class and considered great step up. Now many are so-so and would be totally snubbed by those you think are middleclass (Parkslope newbies or westchester-bound).

  4. “a completely normal looking white woman comes up behind me and says ‘excuse me’, so I think she’s gonna ask for directions, and she says, can you spare a dollar, I need to get on the subway.”

    I’m gonna start doing this.

  5. quote:
speaking of de-gentrification, I was walking down 5th Ave around 18th Street (Manhattan) today, and a completely normal looking white woman comes up behind me and says ‘excuse me’, so I think she’s gonna ask for directions, and she says, can you spare a dollar, I need to get on the subway. I said, I’ll be happy to swipe you in. She says, but it’s a couple of blocks away. I say, no problem, I’m going in that direction. And she says, but I need money for coffee too.

that shit NEVER works! not sure why you call it degentrification tho. you think there are no broke whitey’s in nyc or something?

    *rob*

  6. “I read the Surgeon General’s warning on a pack of cigs. So now I am a surgeon and a general. I’ll fix you right up if my troops wound you in combat.”

Funny. I breed fighting fish…I’m the Sturgeon General.
