Many in the philosophical tradition have theorized about matters that are now the subject of study in the various social sciences — the nature of man (people), society, community, government and what makes our social institutions work or not. Philosophy remains valuable in these ares but so, too the application of empirical and other research methods to study them. Very little philosophizing of use goes on these days without at least a foundation that rests in part and at least implicitly on understandings gained through social science research methods. You can throw out the substantive conclusions of works in these areas, but the methods are valuable if you understand them.
