PS – I certainly do not advocate at all for removal of ANY of the above mentioned programs!
Ishtar – am not so sure about the pride thing so much anymore. I think pride has fallen by the wayside for all economic/socio groups. If you live in the PJ’s or Section 8 and your neighbors and friends and family all subsist on various gov’t programs, I wonder where the ambition is? Same goes for a really rich family who brings up spoiled children filled with entitlements, where’s the ambition there? both are sorta lulled into a protection net
whereas middle-class folks do not have that net it seems…..
And I am not talking about the dirt poor folks in Appalachia or Alabama.
“landlords who literally dont give a crap as long as they get their monthly check every month which is guaranteed regardless. it’s very easy to get kicked out of the section 8 program but if the landlord doesnt care then nothing will happen”
From what my landlord friend said, here in the city, section 8 apts are inspected often to make sure landlords are not providing substandard conditions to tenants. Especially regarding larger apts for people with kids, the rules are quite stringent, making it necessary for landlords to upgrade basic stuff beyond what they might do for non S8 tenants. And I’m not talking about upgrades like granite countertops, but basic construction stuff, like making sure outlets have covers, floors and windows are quality materials and installed right, decent bathroom plumbing fixtures, etc.
Benson, stop reading Section 8 posts and see my post about John’s Deli. We should escort Browstone peeps there instead of L&Bs (eventhough L&Bs is really good as well).
I think folks did not pay attention to what I wrote.
I did not advocate for a cut in the level of section 8 and food stamp benefits. I advocated that these programs be rolled into the EITC to cut administrative costs.
Ishtar’s post is a hoot. Here is her opening line:
“Section 8 is run by HUD, SNAP (Food Stamps) is the USDA, while DHHS deals with TANF (Welfare), so combining these with Welfare payments makes little sense. ”
In other words, they are run by separate bureauacracies, so…let’s keep it that way!! Bureauacracy for bureauacracy’s sake!! Woo-hoo!Yeah, it makes alot of sense for the USDA to be running an anti-poverty program.
Finally, I agree with BrooklynCouch: the biggest entitlements that need to be cut are those for the middle class.
1910 that’s the one. The other location is on 86th street and 23rd avenue but it only has the deli and no place to sit and eat like the Emmons avenue one.
“just tried Brooklyn Brine Pickles (after Biff talked it up last week) and was disappointed. it was OK but not the WOW I was hoping for – especially when it’s pricey. back to my LES suppliers”
That wasn’t me! I mentioned Mile End Deli in the Shake Shack thread but I think it was 11217 who mentioned the pickles specifically. I’m Jewish and I know a good pickle when I taste it (nh).
Mr B hired a union IT person – cant fire said person without a massive severance payout

Pres, where do you get your pickles? I like the whole ones and I like it with a little crunch.
