  1. “Civilized countries have civilized laws, and having strong gun restrictions is one of them. I must say I’m appalled at some of the liberals here being for easy gun ownership. Nobody I’ve ever known keeps a gun, or at least owns up to it.”

cmu, do you know me? I think we’ve met. So, know you know one. lol…

Would you consider Switzerland to be one of those ‘civilized’ countries? I would. Are you aware that by law every Swiss household must own an assault rifle and know how to use it? And by ‘assault rifle’ I mean a real one, not a semi-auto version.

I would generally consider myself a liberal, but I don’t toe the party line on this.

My view is that when only cops, conservatives, and criminals own guns, it’s not a healthy state of affairs.

It’s also my view that a certain incident that happened recently in a small town in India would not be repeated in much of the US since armed citizens would end it quickly.

that’s not always true, my first rabbit i owned, Veruca, had issues about her looks and was very insecure. She was a gorgeous rabbit but always felt ugly for some reason.

Humans are capable of transmitting information to each other. If you do something nice for someone they can describe it to other people, write it down, etc. A pet just thinks nice things about you inside its head and can never explain it to anyone else and can’t write it down, and when they die all of their nice thoughts about you die too.

tell that to my dog when he lifts his leg and pees on a stroller.

  5. “Do you really think the framers thought everyone needed to be free to own guns to protect themselves in an unregualted fashion against the system of government the framers were forming? The amendment’s framers had something in mind that doesn’t quite map onto our 20th century polarized fight over its meaning. ”

Slopefarm, in a word, yes. If you read the Federalist papers you will see an armed militia (every able-bodied person under 40, if I recall) was intended as a balance against an intrusive and repressive Federal government.

“When your pet dies, all of its affection for you dies with it. It is incapable of describing it or transmitting information about it to anyone else. All of those memories just die. So why the investment in making your pet like you?”

im gonna say that is the most weirdest thing i have EVER heard btw. maybe you dont know what having a pet means for some people? the last sentence is weird too, why make your pet you. my dog likes me the least out of everyone in it’s immediate life. in order of who he loves most… my roommate > my roommate’s boyfriend > dog walker #1 > dog walker # 2 > me. it doesnt make me love HIM any less and it doesnt devalue his life here. i dont think that is the point of a pet. ive never even considered my dog a “pet” to begin with. he’s always been this other organism in which me and him found each other on the same road of life’s journey. i dont own him; he’s just a mooch, but i adore him like any wayward follower.

  7. “then back to the other question… is there any limit on what sort of arm you have right to without infringing?
when can you revoke that right? mental state? criminality? material support for group labeled terrorist by the government?”

Most people, including gun owners, have no problems with some reasonable restrictions, and the courts have followed that. Felons, for example, can never legally own guns anywhere. If you’re convicted of supporting a terrorist organization, you’re a felon.

Yes, as I mentioned, you extrapolate from a standard militia weapon from the time of the Constitution, to a standard military issue weapon today, That’s what you should be allowed to own. Gun owners will note that I did allow a downgrade from fully automatic (M16) to semi-auto (AR-15).

Lechacal’s analysis of the political meaning and background of the 2nd Amendment is perfect.
