  1. “how can basically intelligent people espouse the ideas of the right?”

Which right-wing ideas do you think that no ‘basically intelligent person’ could espouse?
I’m confused by why you would associate opinions with intelligence. I don’t see any correlation. There are smart people and dumb people on both sides.

Why would any “right” wing candidate, male or female, garner support from the “entrenched” left legion? Or vice versa? Not going to happen which is why we are in the pickle we are today.

    wasder,
Your statement says it right there.
We are too far polarized at this point.
There is no willingness to compromise,
so we are witness to elections with giant swings
which cause half the nation to feel disenfranchised
    at any given time.
Of course Sarah Palin wouldn’t get any support from her fellow Americans on the left, she’s seen as the “enemy”.
President Obama has said as much, in an interview with a spanish network where he actually said that one group of Americans was the “enemy” of another.

    Unacceptable. He later appologized.

  3. SQOTD (two-parter Disney edition):

Why does Donald Duck wear a towel when he comes out of the shower, when he doesn’t usually wear any pants?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They’re both dogs!

  4. We’re back to terminology, BrooklynCouch. The French right tends to be more traditionalist than free market, but it does believe in less economic regulation than France has currently.
Note that the origin of ‘right wing’ and ‘left wing’ as phrases is French, and modern conservatism grew out of the opposition to the French revolution (you cited Burke). Those fault lines between urban self-perceived elites and rural conservatives are still strong in France.

  5. “How about Chris Christie?”

Guys get a pass. They can be gross fat pigs and still have the balls to call a woman out of shape, fat or unattractive. A$$holes.

Keep it up, asshats. You’re really showing your colors today! GOOD WORK!

  6. Re: France’s politicians.

I’ll state it differently. The common bond between the Left and the Right in France and many European nations is that they are Statist. They believe in a big role for the central government, and (in France particularly) they believe that the government’s top layers should be staffed by folks from their elite universities.

While the French economy has its strong points, it is a fact that entrepeneurship is not nourished there. If folks believe that this is not true, please point to the French equivalent of Google or Intel.
