Cobble, I stand by politicians collectively are smart. not saying they’re GENIUSES but too often they get slapped incorrectly with the “idiot” label. it’s their re-election overhang that causes them to make stupid decision sometimes.

But you’re right that they care more about re-election. Politicians seem to lose themselves once they get into office. Maybe its the perks and the ass kissing of their aides, or the media attention- maybe if the perks and pay were cut back drastically we would see who is really in it for love and who is really in it for money.

One thing I blame Bush for was castrating the SEC. I can’t give the details without help from Google but I know he put in place a very ineffective leader, and gutted the budget to the point where they couldn’t effectively do much.
I DO NOT blame Bush for over-expanding home ownership. That was a decidedly bipartisan effort on the part of the legislature. Hey, everybody wants a free lunch, and to just about every single congressman, promoting irresponsible lending was good politics.
g10 and ishtar, no govt bailouts, I was referring to complaints that many thought the fed should have acted in keeping asset prices from rising too high.
