Holy $hit!!
A “blame the US (and the Western world)for everything” feast on the OT. Incredible. We have Montrose stating that the pre-colonial Indian tribes didn’t engage in war-like behavior and we have Hugo Chavez being lauded .
I have only a few statements to make:
a) this is pure navel-gazing/blame America first-ism. To read the thread above, one would believe that only the Western countries engaged in the slave trade, when in fact every civilization engaged in it up until recently and it existed on the African continent until very recently.
b) threads like the one above is why the Left continues to marginalize itself. I don’t know what to call it: self-hate, moral equivalence run wild, hate for America’s moral authority, whatever. Most folks see it, and don’t like it.
c) Does anyone above realize how much more advanced the US is in terms of race relations and the equitable treatment of all its citizens? What country would you like to discuss? The “sophisticated” Western European countries like France and Germany that disdain and LEGALLY marginalize their Muslim immigrants? How about Malaysis, where ethnic Chinese, who have lived there for centuries, are prohibited from holding any type of political office? How about Japan, where ethnic Koreans and the indigenous Ann people have virtually no legal rights and are treated like pariahs? We can also see what a lovefest many of the sub-Saharan nations of Africa are having.
Unbelievable. THere’s only one cure for this type of thinking, and its coming on November 2nd.
Finally: Slopey – where is your call for “reasonable” dialogue? I’ll take a Carl Paladino rant any day of the week over the fever swamps above.
OK MM, then my unprovable claim still stands: all that stood between that sort of behavior and moving East was technology and imagination and ambition.
I agree with your observations on Romans and the way Europeans treated their colonial subjects (impossible not to, that’s just dry historical record). But again, I claim that Africans would have moved into Europe (more then just Moors in Spain) if they had the resources and organization and technology to do so. Also unprovable of course.
The problem is that all of the bad things the Europeans did are a matter of historical record, but the claim that everyone they colonized would have eventually done the reverse if given the opportunity is unprovable. And that’s why smug liberal arts college professors teach the kind of classes they do.
MM – Roman government adopted foreigners but the common people & soldiers who lived among them looked down on them – called them barbarians, wrote about their lack of hygiene, ignorance, etc. Very similar to hoi polloi reactions throughout history.
Gem, it’s a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. The cake is moist and rich and the frosting is creamy and heavenly. It’s not a buttercream frosting.
With a tall glass of milk it’s the perfect basic chocolate cake.
Lechecal, I did say that Native American tribes conquered and subjegated each other, it happened quite a lot, all across North America. Part of the national American military plan for conquering all of the tribes in North America played on exploiting many of the long standing wars and hatreds between various tribes.

St. Patrick was a Brit, kidnapped by Irish raiders when he was 14 – was a slave, working as a shephard for 7 years before he escaped.
