dibs, John Wideman is a well known intellectual with a couple of dozen books to his name, he’s not just some random schmuck.
It so happens I saw the same thing in July in a different environment. As you know I run around Manhattan much of the day. It was hot and I was tired and I had a late appt, and Manhattan was overrun with tourists. I decided to go to Central Park (just inside CPS) and chill on a bench for a while. To my disgust, every single bench was full of tourists save one. There was a single black man, a regular guy, sitting on a bench all by himself. No one sat nect to him. It was the only bench that didn’t have at least four people on it.
I gave my people a lil’ note of thanks, and took a seat, lol.
I could type things that I see like this all day long, cuz I see things like this on a regular basis. And I’m sure I miss some.
“Park Sloper, Japan is different. it’s definitely racism there but not the sort of hate-based racism that we know.”
Oh, yes, I’m well aware of that. And I had the luxury of knowing that I wasn’t going to be living there forever and that I could leave the petty annoyances behind when I left.
I try to purposely take the seat next to someone who is obviously trying to discourage someone from sitting there.
Like spreading all their possesions around, etc.

Also, the quiet car is for a very special sort of obsessive compulsive person. They’re really nutjobs in that car, for the most part.

I sit in the Cafe car anyway. You get the whole seat. I have in the past sat next to a cute Asian, Latino or black guy in the regular coaches.
