Donatella;
I am not a “booth babe”. I’m the “Oh great I don’t have to talk to someone in Japlish and I can talk to an engineer instead of a salesman” stalking horse!!!
That op-ed is humorous. Especially because I’ve experienced it. I’m usually praying no one sits by me. I like to spread out.
I do wish attractive men would sit next to me more often than not. I’m only annoyed when it’s some entitled chick making hella noise with her kale chips and venti soy latte, which is more often than not.
“It isn’t so much malicious as outright thoughtless. Dave’s comment last night was a good example.”
No, that was simply ignorance (and I don’t mean that in a negative way) of the term’s historical meaning. It was purely coincidental that he used it. I knew right away that it was ignorance and not malice, cuz that would be out of character for Dave. As I said to someone off line, a lot of Black folx really don’t know how little we actually know about these things.
denton…I think John Edgar Wideman is being a bit of a snobby elitist. I ride Amtrak twice a week between here and Philly and back.
First of all, people will always pick an empty row first no matter wht..that’s how it works…like on the shuttle the unwritten rule is no middle seat passenger unless absolutely necessary.
His leg from NYC to providence I’m sure is nowhere near as full as from Philly to NYC.
thirdly, I have developed friendships with a number of “train people” and I know they would all pe very suspect of this observation that Mr. John Edgar Wideman makes.
Park Sloper – i can’t wait to read that book – thanks for reminding me!!!!
my own Mother In Law has an interesting “migration” up north from Alabama as she had supposedly “mouthed off” to a white lady in her town( we are talking late 50’s/early 60’s so you can imagine the racial tension) so her mom and dad and all her siblings feared for her life – so she got sent up north to live with relatives. I am not surprised by my mother in law – she’s a fiery lady who is 5 feet tall and not afraid of anyone!
I wonder what she said to the lady -I keep forgetting to ask her!

Park Sloper, Japan is different. it’s definitely racism there but not the sort of hate-based racism that we know.
denton..I think the “booth babe index” has a lot of merit.

I say BULLSHIT.
Thanks for the book recommendation, Donatella. I’ll check it out.
