  1. ” I get your point, but I think if I had money and was retiring I would pick a safer island in the caribbean to retire to.”

I would love to retire in Barbados or St. Lucia.

Jamaica is such a mess, they actually have to send their worst trauma patients to PR for medical care (or maybe they just do that for tourists). Jamaica doesn’t/didn’t have to be the place that it is. 30 years ago, during the last global economic crisis, the president or PM basically told people if he didn’t like the decisions he made there were X number of flights to Miami daily (what a way to engage people!). People with means picked up and left creating a “brain drain” that continues to this day, which in turn worsened the financial situation there and leads us to today (underinvestment in education, healthcare, infrastructure, etc.).

  2. Re retiring to 3rd world countries, no matter how rich you are, how nice the weather is, how beautiful your house is, or how many servants you have, you are extracting yourself from your entire social world and you will ultimately be isolated and/or be misunderstood. OR you can bond with alienated Americans looking for somebody to speak English with/comiserate, which is my personal vision of hell.

I would like do a snowbird thing in a Mercosur South American country (Argentina/ Uruguay?) for a while. i.e. take University courses in Spanish literature or something like that and come back after I get enough.

  3. I only meant no second bedroom.

Good for single person or couple. But that works for you — limited pool = 850k and not 925k IMO.

A window unit in that bedroom wouldn’t be awful. Especially if there is storage in the basement, you just get a small light one and put it in for a couple of months and then store it

  4. LOL DH

If it’s a matter of my apartment being meat-locker-cold versus not having ugly window A/Cs, I opt for meat-locker-cold.

More concerned about the 2nd bedroom, but really want to see this place in person . . . and not sure why it isn’t on StreetEasy.

DIBS, how about some Mr Slims in there? Just have some woodwork dude put some nice box over it (ie like those on radiators)

This is why people don’t hire Chinese decorators, Vern Yip also being a case in point!!!!

  6. “Rob, third world poverty is unlike anything anyone suffers here.”

I’d seen third world poverty on TV for years and read about it aplenty, but I was not prepared for the visceral shock of seeing it first hand.
