ok – so conceivably I am a US citizen with only a US passport – can I just uproot and buy a house on St. Johns and live there without any special visas etc?
you know what’s so sad about the fact that HAITI was paying FRANCE back “reparations” until the 1990s’ – that someone in the French gov’t didn’t stop and say WOW this is really bad that we are cashing checks from this impoverished island nation b/c of some silly deal/treaty both governments accepted 200 years ago
I have an American friend who has lived in the USVI for the last 30 years. I believe he enjoys all the rights and priveleges of any other US citizen. They do vote in presidential elections. I don’t know how the local gov’t is organized though.
Of course it ain’t, CGar. It’s the poorest in the Western Hemisphere and was forced to pay what is about equal to $20 billion today to their colonizers because they didn’t want to be slaves.
CGar, ok, babe you are on. Just no roughing it please. No Patagonian trail. We’re talking about cafe society in Buenos Aires, ok? Where’s 12117? He is a part time Porteno, I hear. BTW, I went to the north of Argentina once, a poor, poor state called Formosa for work. That was an interesting experience.
People in the USVI are US citizens by birth. Just like all American territories, they have a representative in Congress. Their governing body is similar to that of any other state in the union. They do not pay federal taxes, but they do pay taxes to the USVI like we pay NY state taxes.

Freedom has a mighty high price.
No extradition treaty with Uruguay? Perfect.

France should have just grabbed Baby Doc and family’s money, now that they are in France. He and his cronies got most of Haiti’s money, anyway.
