Re: “helping yourself” to food at a host’s house, I think that a guest should not have to resort to that. I guess that is obvious, but apparantly not to some people. Also, I make a big deal about making sure my guests are comfortable re meals, bedrooms, noise, etc. Also, a host/hostess should have food a guest can eat if they wake up in the middle of the night — i.e. help yourself to anything, here’s some fruit, snacks, etc.
“But, I’m Jewish, and my parents loved having house guests, and loved nothing more than feeding them.”
Maybe I have a little Jewish in me.
For my lack of cooking abilities. I make sure I have lots of food for guests and when they stay over, I get up early and prepare breakfast.

Ditto. I’m neither Jewish nor Italian nor any of the other ethnic groups with which one would immediately associate “food” as a core attribute, not am I a particularly accomplished cook. But breaking bread together is one of the greatest joys of having friends visit. For breakfast, it’s easy enough — even if one doesn’t want to cook — to put out a nice buffet of fruit, cereals, yogurt, bread, jam, coffee or tea, etc.
“Thanks for clarifying, DH. I must say I was confused by balcony off the bathroom. Dare I ask what’s wrong with a balcony off the bedroom?”
a balcony off the bathroom would be great to air out all that poo-mist.
nothing wrong with a balcony off the bedroom in my book. definitely not cool with brownstoners – since balconies are for entertaining and walking guests through one’s bedroom is apparently low class or something.
DH, if one invites friends over (for the day, overnight, couple of days, etc), should have food/drink inventory stocked. if not, be diligent enough to poll anyone want any food, drinks, etc from the super mkt, pizzeria,….
“Could Obama really be this stupid:?
“Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell says President Barack Obama wants to subject half of all small-business income to a tax increase…””
No, McConnell could be that intellectually dishonest.
Thank you, Slopey!

I’m sure you have before, ET. And you could if you play your cards right.
