  1. “you could go back to the north american utopia known as canada ya know :-/”

It’s funny, the public transport here is very efficient, although it covers much less of the city than in NYC. Around half of my colleagues drive to work.
That said, Torontonians *hate* the TTC (MTA equivalent). Much more unpopular than the MTA in NYC. I think it’s because some of the workers are impolite (unusual up here) & they apparently go on strike at inconvenient times.

  2. etson, the last time I was in London I bought an Oyster card and I forget the cost but it was pretty cheap. It was unlimited for a week and very good. Also, London stations are so much better mainained than NYC, where things are pretty uneven.

  3. “am serious:
what happens to someone who jumps the turnstile? and if you jump over the turnstile what are the chances of getting caught? I mean there are plenty of stations where there are no agents or cops so can’t you jump?”

g10, you used to get a $100 ticket. They just raised it to, I believe, $250.

Also, if you don’t have ID, or you have an outstanding warrant, or maybe even a name similar to someone with an outstanding warrant, you get locked up until they get it straightened out.

These empty turnstiles are gonna start being big entrapment setups, with a cop lying in wait at every station. This is gonna be a con and a way to raise revenue.

A year ago I was dumb enuf to go thru a gate at Herald Square in a similar situation, the booth was closed (at 1PM) and there were only two swinging gates to get in and out of. There were hundreds of people trying to get in and out, in fact the situation was a bit dangerous. I had a feeling I was going get busted, so before I took a photo:

Sure enuf, I got ticketed. I went to transit court to fight it, showed the judge this photo and another. In fact the judge was taken aback when I showed it and I thought he was actually going to find in my favor after checking my claim that all the turnstiles were locked up at 1PM in the busiest station in the system. I also showed that I have with me at all times not only a 30 day metrocard but a regular $40 metrocard in case the unlimited one fails.

I got the decision in the mail that the judge found against me. Effin’ scumbags…

It’s all about the money, honey.

  4. Something strange and unnerving happened yesterday. There is a wacky looking young man who hangs around by the stoop of a condo complex near my house. He smokes blunts and always looks high and slightly out of it, mostly wideeyed and goofy. Harmless looking, but definately out of it. Then I noticed that this spot became his “place”. He was always there and always high. He sort of says hello and I give him the half smile of semi politeness. He also sees me coming and going, in and out of my house.

Anyway, he wasn’t so harmless looking yesterday. He was screaming at the top of his lungs (rapping?) full of gun talk and f**king up people gangsta rap kind of talk. He kept it up for over an hour. I called 311 but based on my description of what was going on they called 911. The cops arrived — lots of them. One very kind and fatherly cop talked to him and it turns out that the guy has “mental health” issues (may have been hospitalized?) and it seems like the cops know him. They spoke to him, later telling me that they told him “you can’t practice your rapping on the street like that, you are scaring people.” The kid had explained that he was trying to let off steam because something happened to him. The cops told him that the next time it happened they were taking him to the hospital. I really had respect for those officers, particularly the one who spoke to him the most.
They were really the ones to assess what was happening (not any of us neighbors) and they seemed to handle it well.

I hope the guy gets his act together, he has been creeping me out for the last few weeks.
