I have no confirmation of this, just what the “older” folks told me, but people with mental health issues were not allowed to roam the streets back in the day. I’m making no claims about the quality of care they received where they were housed, just that they were housed some where.
“In 1985, fare was $0.90. That equates to $1.79 in 2009 dollars with inflation. Again, fares have risen more than inflation.”
Alright – fair enough. I’m not happy about all the fare increases either, but I would also say service is much better today than it was in 1985 (correct me if I’m wrong oldtimers) – so $2.25 isn’t THAT crazy today.
The only other comparable system in the world, by size, is Tokyo.
The Tokyo subway is relatively new. Half the roads in the country weren’t even paved prior to the 1968 Olympics. It is new, spiffy, efficient. It is also super crowded and full of pervs. And it closes at midnight.
Donatella- what struck me most out of your story was there seemed to be a cop that actually cared about his condition
am sorry but am finding more and more cops just to lack basic human empathy and common sense
Other transportation authorities also subsidize their systems at a much higher rate than the MTA. Other cities are working with a 60% plus subsidy, while the MTA is something around 30%, which leaves rides on the hook for 70% of the cost.

How much was a brownstone in 1904?
Just give him a compliment on how well he raps. He’ll be your friend and protector forever.

“the last time I was in London I bought an Oyster card and I forget the cost but it was pretty cheap.’
Low end of what I quoted ($2.80 ish) is zone 1 fare with an Oyster card.

I’ll try and find the link for this.
