  1. Yep, agree with benson re the mosque. They totally have the right to build, I totally have the right not to like it. Cab driver assault is irrelevant, although obviously very wrong.

“these are the same Americans who probably only think Christians are Christians and not broken up into different sects based on varying degrees of belief”

I think this as well. One is either Christian or not. Denomination is just a way of expressing the same essential thing.

Oh, and hi chicken! Hope you are enjoying being back over this side of the pond and that the family is well.

  2. Donatella – I actually think most Americans don’t take time to learn about different things. I think I am a person who is genuinely curious about things and people and places and so I read about it, watch a show about it or just learn a thing or two from listening to folks talk (even here on the OT!)
my own friends, girls I grew up with from good well educated homes who went to Ivy League colleges wouldn’t have a clue that Islam is broken up into different sects because it’s simply not interesting to them. I just don’t think many world topics are on normal people’s radar –sad, but true

  3. Actually, Bloomberg gained quite a few points in my estimation thanks to his blunt honesty. While the opponents keep trying to rephrase the argument as “insensitivity”, the fact of the matter is, where the center is to be built is not that close to Ground Zero. YOu can’t even see it. I know the block extremely well- after shifts we used to hang out at the Dakota roadhouse- a bar right next door. The NY Dolls- the strip club- is right down the street so if we want to talk insensitivity and sacred ground, let’s talk about that strip club.

And anyone who watched the news reports of the rallies on Sunday would have to be blind not to see the very real bigotry. As dave said, the Iman is a Sufi. Yet in the eyes of the opponents, he is as guilty as Al Qaeda. That is bigotry- sorry but there is no way to tart it up as “insensitivity to the families.”

And as I have pointed out before, and which is widely ignored, at least 100 Muslims died in the attack, and one of them was a police cadet. Yet some people think it’s ok to insult them by equating them with the terrorists. And that is shameful.

  4. You know, I gotta speak up. Comments like Donatella’s and Gem’s above are exactly why, day after day, I say to myself: “I gotta get out of NYC – the land of political correctness”.

Yes, the problem is really the stupidity of Americans. I see.

It couldn’t be that there is a radical movement in the Islamic populations that is bent of destroying the West. It couldn’t be that this movement is gaining steam such that it induces rich and middle-class Saudi Arabians to fly a plane into the WTC. It couldn’t be that this movement is now inducing formerly Americanized Muslims to join Jihad, as in Fort Hood, the Times-Square bomber, etc. It couldn’t be that it induces the son of Rich Nigerian, who had no direct experience with the US, to board a plane on Christmas Day and try to blow it up. Finally, it couldn’t be that most Muslim countries, be they Sunni or Shia, don’t afford even the minimum of religious liberties that the US provides.

Finally, it couldn’t be that there is no movement within Islam to put these radical forces in check.

Nah, the problem is that Americans are stupid/bigotted/racist/etc.

I am so sick and tired of this self-loathing.

This so-called “moderate” Iman refuses to rule out funding from Iran. He refuses to condemn a terrorist organization. Immediately after 9/11, he tells an audience in Australia that the US has killed as many innocent Muslims as the folks who flew those planes into the WTC, but I would be a bigot to take account of this fact, right?

    Give me a friggin break.

  5. GUH-ROSS at that LuLu’s in PS to sell used kids clothes :-/

that is just going to make the nyc bedbug infestation even WORSE!

i am sorry. SO sorry i mentioned it again, but i find that kind of business so close to where i live absolutely vile and disgusting and should be against the law.

    *rob*

  6. How about Joe Miller chances in November?

He doesn’t seem to realize how much govt money is sent to Alaska(just like you know who).

    Thinks unemployement insurance is unconstitutional.

    Should be fun.
