I also think Benson shouldn’t leave. I really like him and respect him. Which is why I reacted with a lot of hurt to his remarks yesterday — I probably shouldn’t be posting on OT for the time being myself, being a bit burned out and touchy. But I can can about interacting on the OT about something serious (and sometimes we actually talk about serious things) It is helpful in making arguments to take each comment one by one and to be careful to read them. I felt as though I was being dismissed without the courtesy of even being read. Having said that, I truly like the guy and think that even though he gets hysterical sometimes, that his comments are very intelligent and valuable. And that he is a decent and nice guy.
Benson – don’t leave. Your perspective is very important – it reinforces the fact that people can disagree with my position for REAL reasons, and not just because the other side must be dumb or ignorant – as you are clearly neither.
This thread above came at the right (or wrong) time for me, depending on how you want to look at it.
I continually question why I am in NYC, other than the fact that my family is here. Other than that, I’d surely be out of here. Too many damn shrill folks here. I travel all around this country and meet all sorts of folks. You can have conversations about all sorts of things, and it never becomes this shrill.
Again, take a look at the conversation above. How long did it take for it to degrade into the usual nonsense that those who had issues with the center are bigots, ignorant, etc. I wonder if that is how folks talk with their friends in real life.
With a few exceptions, this OT reminds me of what I’ve come not to like about NYC. I tip my hat to Snappy, Denton and Slopey who, despite rarely agreeing with me, try to argue the issue on the merits and not demonize the opponent.
I also remain in my conviction in that, despite DIBS’ protestations above, there is a political correctness that hovers over this site, and Gem’s e-mails are proof of that.
I’ll still be around on Brownstoner, but I need to get away from this OT. Not fun. Not educational.
Wake up, lech! *kick!* Yeah- we’re sorry but rob decided he wasn’t going to obsess over bedbugs and it left such a gaping hole in the OT conversation that we just had to fill it somehow. We did the best we could, considering you weren’t here to contribute any brilliant bon mots. 🙂
The fish and chips up here is sooooooo much better than anywhere in NYC. In NYC it’s all breading and a small amount of shitty fish. Here it’s a nice big cut of primo fish with a litle breading around it.
Oh hey guys, it was sunny and beautiful on the cape today so no reason at all to be on the Internet. No chowdah DIBS, but had a great dinner with the family at Catch of the Day right near the Eastham / Wellfleet town line on Rt 6. Shared a dozen raw oysters and a bunch of steamers with the Mrs and then had pan blackened bluefish for myself.
I don’t think the al Waleed / NewsCorp thing is a very good argument:
1) It’s a public company. Anyone can buy shares. Unless NewsCorp issued equity directly to him (don’t think that’s the case) then there is no analogy.
2) Even if al Waleed did exert some control over NewsCorp, what would be wrong with FoxNews showing some editorial independence?

Whoa – just thought of something – I wonder if they will try to finance the cultural center using tax exempt debt. People will go ape shit.
