The NY Dolls- the strip club- is right down the street so if we want to talk insensitivity and sacred ground, let’s talk about that strip club.

lol. strippers generally dont kill people.

    *rob*

  2. snappy, on the dishwasher…

I’ve been getting ready to do some stuff in my house upstate, so I’ve actually been talking to knowledgeable people. To my disgust, being a fan of GE’s higher divisions, I have been told universally that they are terrible.

I have a Bosch here and love it, but it’s expensive. A lot of people seem to love Miehle, but it also is expensive.

I would agree w benson on KitchenAid as a solid middle of the road machine, and I got the same advice upstate.

When I moved into my coop in 1995, the existing dishwasher broke pretty quick, and I replaced it with a KitchenAid. Around 2005 or so, I had to replace the propeller thingie, the part was readily available and and easy DIY. Still going in 2010.

  3. benson,

I am not so sure all of the high profile opponents of the project are being so clear that this is a campaign merely to persuade the developers to make a choice not to do something they otherwise have the right to do. When Newt Gingrich says “we would not allow” something japanese next to Pearl Harbor, who is the “we” with the authority to decide what is “allowed”? When Sarah Palin asks New Yorkers to “refudiate” it sounds like she is asking for the project to be denied. It also sounds like she is stoking her real Americans v. eastern elites meme. Where is her direct appeal to the developers to walk away from the project? I think the lines are blurred by the opposition whether this is about persuading the developers to back down or finding a way to override whatever right they have.

Why don’t the opponents seem to care about the mosque thzat already meets at the location, or 4 blocks away from GZ or 12, or the Islamic prayer inside the Pentagon? The best solution on Park Place may be a brokered one, and I do respect the feelings of those touched by 9/11 who are upset by this (although disagree how mucgh weight those feeligns should get with respect to teh particualrs of this project), but the media campaign as it has developed has gone beyond that and spilled into some pretty strong demagoguery and it feels to me like the targets and the goals have morphed into something political at this point, imho.

  4. Benson,

    Don’t go away!

Don’t look now, but I am agreeing with you.

And GENTLY (repeat, gently) told Gem, that I don’t agree that we should discount the ability of Americans to think through, understand etc, differentiate on these issues nor should we underestimate other Americans.

Please go back and tell me how I was not agreeing with you there.

And be careful when you do it, please.

  5. “I think it’s more appalling that there is still a big open hole at Ground Zero where no building or memorial has been erected in 9 years!”

YES. The “hole” is a tribute to the inefficiency, beauracracy and litigousness of America and NYC in particular.
