  1. “Why do you assume that the tribal customs of some primitive countries are coming to the US?”

Because he ingests far too much right wing propaganda/Fox News/fear-mongering, and doesn’t employ critical thinking.

  2. “Seems to me you would get along better with people living off the land, practicing trades, entrepreuners, etc. You said “…but I would probably…hang out with people who are more like me if I did well in school.”

It’s one thing to enjoy manual labor. It’s another to enjoy the sorts of things that other people who do manual labor enjoy. Like Nascar and bass fishing, for example.

  3. “Unfortunately we live in a society where laboreres are routinely assumed to be unfit for “better” white collar work and for the most part people who are capable of doing so enter fields like medicine, banking, engineering, management, law, etc.”

Why would a laborer be a candidate for “better” work? I would think most people who are laborers are laborers because they want to be that, not a banker or lawyer.

And, why would a laborer *consider* white-collar work “better?” Sure, maybe higher paying – but there are some pretty well-paid folks (contractors, plumbers, electricians, sandhogs, construction workers)who do jobs that are mostly manual labor.

To me it’s all about expectations, not “potential.” What do you expect to realize from life? And once you identify out what you expect, are you willing to do what it takes to achieve that?

  4. ****BEDBUG BUGBEAR ALERT******

…so I was cleaning the back yard of my property in Bushwick this morning.
something I do twice a year to keep the backyard drain
    from clogging with debris.

there are dead leaves all over the concrete patio with
plant matter and seeds and all manner of organic substances in various states of decomposition.

…as I’m sweeping it all into a corner, I start to notice small black round insects crawling from beneath the debris.
I don’t think anything at first since I’m used to seeing
pillbugs, beetles, snails and centipedes back there.

    …so I keep sweeping.

…a few minutes pass and I continue to notice the same type of small black insect with a round body crawling all over the place. I have to stop and take a closer look.

I grab one of the little buggers and start to examine it.
it’s the same size as a bedbug,
it’s similar in color but darker
it’s got 6 legs so it’s an insect
    close but no cigar.

looks like some sort of new beetle population that has taken over the backyard. never saw them before but similar in appearance to a bedbug, except that bedbugs live indoors as far as I know and their food source is humans.

    So I figure I’m ok.

    ….for now.

  5. 1) The naked Cowboy walks along the streets in the theater district in his tighty whities, so why can’t a woman wear a burka. She isn’t being forced by any governmental power to wear a burka any more than you are being forced to wear your underwear in public, wear a cowboy hat and carry a guitar.

    2) Honor killings are not sanctioned in the US. A murder is a murder.

Why do you assume that the tribal customs of some primitive countries are coming to the US?

    WHY?

  6. DIBS, moving the family to another state and completely changing a way of life is a veto situation. Spouse gets veto, no questions asked. I most certainly wear the trousers in my family, thank you very much.

  7. Some of the best thinkers I’ve come across in my short time on this earth have been people doing manual labor. Some of these people come across problems on the job that require a great deal of critical thinking and it shows when you interact with them. I get kind of annoyed when people make the assumption that folks who do manual labor aren’t capable of doing white collar jobs that require a lot of education (and debt!).
