  1. But Denton, Orthodox Jewish women are coming out of an Eastern European tradition. The men are wearing clothes adapted from styles in the 18th century. Mozart would recognise the articles of clothing seen on some sects today. The women are dressing from a mid 20th century Eastern European peasant tradition.

Traditional Muslim women are dressing like the Beduin desert people they decended from, from an even earlier time, totally different place. A burqa protected the wearer from the desert heat, believe it or not, and the sand, as well as from a man’s eyes. You can’t compare them.

Also, any woman who grows to adulthood within that tradition knows the rules. She has to do what she has to do, but strange men are not supposed to look them in the eye, so I can understand her anger that she is being violated by a bold gaze, a stranger looking at the only part of her that is revealed.

  2. “I’m disappointed and surprised by some of the covert racism in this thread.”

“Personally I’m disgusted by it Biff, although not really shocked at all.”

    That makes two of us.

  3. biff,

    notice one thing however,
New York has over a hundred Mosques
no one has ever seriously mentioned
    a problem with them,
except in connection with recruiting for
    al quaeda prior to 9/11.

what I mean is that we are a tolerant nation,
but let us not be so politically correct as
to ignore certain movements that are in direct
opposition with the spirit of individuality and
    pluralism that imbues this nation.
