“The decision, though an instant landmark in American legal history, is more than that. It also is a stirring and eloquently reasoned denunciation of all forms of irrational discrimination, the latest link in a chain of pathbreaking decisions that permitted interracial marriages and decriminalized gay sex between consenting adults.
As the case heads toward appeals at the circuit level and probably the Supreme Court, Judge Walker’s opinion will provide a firm legal foundation that will be difficult for appellate judges to assail.”
DIBS, off balance sheet eventually pops back onto b/s once stuff craps out hard enough. diff story if gov is able/willing to let those 2 entities die off if they crap out hard.
BrooklynCouch, What sort of law do you practice? I really hope it’s not contract law! And I hope you don’t actually charge your clients.
I own a company that makes marbles. I wish to sign a contract with a glass supplier X.
“I’m sorry, you can’t buy from X because they sell new glass. Marbles can only be made of recycled glass. I know it’s not what you want and it doesn’t serve your needs and it’s a hardship for X too because they don’t usually deal in such small quantities… but that’s the law!”
What part of *that* law is rational?
Do you really think setting up a system of sham marriages is better than one which supports LEGAL civil unions?!
“same-sex unions in premodern europe” Was one of the more interesting books I read in recent years. Seems like gay marriage has been around a while…
A great editorial on the gay marriage debate:

JB, would you be willing to be someone’s 2nd or 3rd wife?
Yes, denton, legalizing them all would be a big boost to SS and tax revenues.

rob, as usually you are half-right at best. Gay men out-earn straight men, but gay women under-earn straight women.
And dibs, you are wrong when you say:
“Developed Europe and the US both have about the same low (very low) birthrates. ”
Not so, the US has a birthrate higher than the Eurozone and higher than replacement, probably due to both immigration and religion.
Be interesting if the ‘close the borders’ crowd realizes what it might due to the birthrate. THink SS is in bad shape now?
I think polygamy should be legal.
