Sorry rf, you were right about the costs. Binghamton is somehwat cheaper on the comparison I just looked up. Must have remembered some old numbers b/c I did once look at this…Is it Florida that has the very cheap state colleges now? Will try to avoid a subjective discussion on quality.
Guess my point was that TX is far from an intellectual backwater and has good universities and a successful economy.
Etson, re Texas, we’ve compared notes on this I think — I like Austin and San Antonio is OK, (two of my cousins are now very happy down there) and Houston is better than people think (lots of money in the arts) but for me, it just a little alien..
Biff, congratulations to your wife. That is a great accomplishment to score a great job at Fancy Pants after an 8 year break. Wonderful. And I am sure that you will find the right words to reject the offer yourself.
Re: Texas, it is true that the economy has been growing all through the shitstorm we lived in the rest of the country. Texas is OK, I guess, and I have the chance to work there in my field, I just can’t move again. And I am sick of cultural adaptation. One of my friends down there too finds that the utter “redness” of the place can at times be oppressive.
Good point, but I think creation is not a scientific theory. It is an article of faith for some. It is only a “theory” in a political sense as some are trying to pose it as such to counterbalance evolution for purposes of science instruction.
ID is an attempt to masquerade creation as scientific theory. But I’ve always wondered why religious right would cede so much ground. In attempting to confirm scientifically the role of the divine in the shaping of the world, they cede the scientific timeline and the progression of life forms recognized through scientific discovery. Gone is any notion of biblical truth. Not sure why they are fighting so hard after conceding so much.
As many theologians have said, God’s hand could be in the design of the laws of biology, chemistry and physics that, left to oeprate without further divine intervention, produced what we call evolution. Seems like the ID people are 99% of the way there. They just want to see God’s intervention along the way as a bulwark against the notion that evolution is a Godless enterprise.

Thanks Dona!
Lechacal,
When my daughter is in school learning about science, I would like her to learn about evolution, not creation or intelligent design.
You? Your kids?

Jackal,

Etson,
SUNY Binghamton, where I went to college, is much cheaper than Univ. of Austin/TX, both for instate and out-of-state students.

I hear the gay rodeos are good as well, DIBS.
There are a lot of jobs in Texas for animal husbandry.
