  1. “However, science, which should be taught in all schools, should not be turned into a new religeon, which is basically what has happened.”

I agree, it’s a coping mechanism. People say, “it’s science” without questioning it because if you think too much about science/reality/”world is spinning so fast you can’t even feel it,” you might freak out. I know I do.

  2. ditto, I am increasingly of the view that most staged fights over foothold issues are ultimately about sex. My humble and unscientific view is that people fight about religion because of how it relates to sexual dominance and freedom and gender issues.

Or maybe I’m just a perv who thinks about sex all the time. Anyways, I’m hung over and need to go about wrapping things up here and getting myself out those revolving doors for the last time.

  3. how to behave towards others = ethics
Should be taught in Robber Barron School

what happens after you die = Mortician Class.
Should be an elective (or possibly hygene)

how life came from non-life = primordial soup
Should be taught as cooking and donated to the free school lunch

  4. “I think creationism is just a foothold issue for a much bigger fight.”

Of course it is, people only get wound up about science when it (perceivedly) conflicts with their political/religious views (think evolution, climate change). They don’t give a crap about 99% of science whether its transmembrane ion channel flow theory, butterly migration hypothesis, sub-atomic particle predictions.

  5. “However, science, which should be taught in all schools, should not be turned into a new religeon, which is basically what has happened.”

Good point, especially those science classes at school that tell you how to behave towards others, what happens after you die, and how life came from non-life.

  6. Just to be clear: When I say I’m not particularly worried about it that’s just an expression of how big a deal I think this issue is. I am against the teaching of creationism and ID in public schools. These things should not be dignified by treating them as somehow equivalent to a scientific theory. But I can explain that to my kids in 30 seconds, and so can anyone else. I think creationism is just a foothold issue for a much bigger fight.

  7. “BHO: The What would like to speak with you. Please provide an email address he can contact you at.BHO: The What would like to speak with you. Please provide an email address he can contact you at.”

Being called to the principal’s office?

  8. “When my daughter is in school learning about science, I would like her to learn about evolution, not creation or intelligent design.
    You? Your kids?”

I don’t particularly care one way or another. My kids will be fine either way. I think the creationism issue has become a channel through which people fight about a much broader fight about conservatism and religion. It’s pretty easy to make the creationist agenda look ridiculous (most of it is, I have family members out in Kansas City who believe some astonishing things), but I don’t think liberals are really earnestly worried that their kids are going to be exposed to creationism. I think they latch on to the issue because it’s such an easy win and try to use that momentum to score on other issues they really care about.

Slopefarm, you’re right about creationism not being a theory in the same sense as evolution. It’s not science, and neither is intelligent design. Neither is derived from any kind of scientific process. Creation is the open rejection of evolution. ID is an attempt to remove conflict between the two.
