  1. m4less, i see no point in trying hard over the age of 21. sorry, but i just don’t. i squandered my youth studying and studying and stuyding. also, i probably wouldnt have gotten straight a’s if i majored in anything real. psychology and art? blah. anyone can get a’s if you they really tried. art was all about bullshi+ting and trying to be as pretentious as you can be.

    i do wish i majored in something different, but i have no regrets, who cares. people who take life so seriously and try hard arent going to live any longer than those who don’t. in fact they will probably just croak sooner.

  2. there are “those” kind of interns but there are legit ones abound too. I chose a no pay internship over a paid one at Merrill Lynch so that I can see / try something different. I took a paid part-time gig at night and weekends to give me spending $$$ (plus I saved some from gigs during rest of the yr). Don’t poo poo others who willing to do it to better themselves and dont let some rich kids situation ruin it all for us avg joes

  3. I’ve definitely seen what benson describes. I am sometimes involved in interviewing, and I perk up when I see a resume of someone working while getting good grades. I know that person can manage and prioritize the complexities of the job. I would expect to see less on the intern/extracurricular front in such a case. Even someone with an eye-catching internship, I still want to know what was expected of them, what they’ve learned and what judgment they’ve exercised. I know there’s a lot of cookie-cutter hiring out there and that’s where having the financial wherewithall to intern creates an advantage.

  4. Rob, apologies, just using you as an example —

    “Dont go moan about others who want a little more in life and is willing to take a free internship. that’s why I’m harping on him.”

    M4L – how could Rob do this? Who would pay his expenses?

  5. JB, Rob is a smart dude whose laziness sometimes masks that intelligence. straight A’s in college is a nice feat. one would think Rob could attend more if that’s what he chooses to do. but that’s his choice – ie he happy with his life. Dont go moan about others who want a little more in life and is willing to take a free internship. that’s why I’m harping on him.

  6. Yes, benson, thank you for the lecture. I know you think I’m some entitled trust fund liberal unemployed slacker asshole. But I did actually work in the corporate world for many years. And saw the kids of higher ups appear for summer internships. And also watched them drink a lot of iced coffee, in between planning their very important weekends.

    That’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about good kids getting an opportunity to see from the inside what a certain field of work is like. And apparently, they did well. So why crap on them!?

    I don’t appreciate companies that many use interns as a way to get free labor. But that’s a different conversation.

  7. Cobble;

    As an example: I once had a boss who gave an internship to his orthodontist’s kid (who was also his neighbor). In return for this favor, the orthodontist gave my boss’s kid free braces.
