  1. cmu, what’s scary about that? That’s just the way this stuff works in some of these organizations. It’s not like I’m suggesting this for normal work environments or anything. Sheesh. Just trying to paint a picture of what happens out there.

  2. “Hi there. Come on in. Close the door. Yup, all the way closed, make sure it clicks. I guess it looks like we’re going to work together. Thing is, I might have to rely on you to perform under some pretty bad conditions, and my life might depend on that. Also, it’s super important for you to be willing to do things just because someone who outranks you says so, even if you don’t like it and it hurts really bad, because all of our lives depend on that kind of discipline. I know you’ve been through training, but I know what kind of namby pamby training the government puts you through these days. The goddamn press is all over it the second some kid gets a broken finger. But we still have to be 100% sure we can trust you. You remember how you just locked the door? You don’t know the code so you can’t get out of this room until we’re done with you. We’re gonna beat the crap out of you and then we’re gonna make you do some stuff that makes you really unhappy. And tomorrow morning it’s gonna hurt pretty bad. But if you can stand at attention tomorrow and never mention this again and work with a smile on your face we’ll trust that you’ll be there for us when we all have to do stuff 10 times worse than what we’re about to do for you right now. So are you in? Do want to be part of this team or do you want to walk out the door right now, no questions asked? Your choice. You’re in? OK, put on this blindfold.”

  3. rob- since you don’t live in Bed-Stuy, let alone go over there so of course, we wouldn’t expect you to understand. And it is not a run of the mill yuppie bakery. How about a little foreknowledge before you post in ignorance?

  4. jessie: …then why is it so hard to come to terms with roughing up some of our own — you’re training people to operate weapons that can kill people. the whole thing is ugly

Exactly. Ugly. Maybe necessary *in context* (my personal jury’s out on that one), but hardly something to be proud of or not thoughtful about. Which is what I was reacting to initially.
