Da kid wanted to go to Amsterdam for her college ‘graduation present’. I said I ain’t paying for a trip like that so you can go and smoke weed in the cafes. I forgot what we gave her but it didn’t add up to a plane ticket.
For her sixteenth birthday we sent her and three friends to dinner at Frank & Tony’s on 5th Ave (remember that place)?
You guys seem to be using “milestone” to mean “point in time that just goes by.” I prefer to give people money for “accomplishment.”
An 18th birthday is a milestone for a child but an accomplishment for his parents. You know what? Give 100 bucks to this kid’s parents for the accomplishment of raising a child who made it to the milestone of high school graduation presumably without being a delinquent.
“If you can’t tell the difference between remarks that aim to discount someone’s opinion because of their income, and those that attempt to impose an orthodoxy of thought, it’s not my problem – it’s yours.”
weak! they were parrallel! your characterization of the former statement is willfully wrong. you must have done terrible on standardized tests. oops, that was personal.
example 1:
someone comments that the people who bemoan doormen’s raises are the same people who got huge bonuses themselves
you translate that to mean wealthy people’s opinions don’t count. huh?
example 2:
you comment that you think (free of any evidence) that people who bemoan gentrification are the same people who advocate for diversity
“ability to not blow your brains out from wasting 7 hours a day listening to idiots” – that is important survival skill to learn to succeed in work-a-day world.
That was a good return on your investment.
True, the Blood Meridian 1st edition I posted is only in
“good” condition and has ex lebris marks all over it,
but you gotta start somewhere, I’m trying to keep it in the $100 dollar ballpark here.
Here’s one you’d like:
I picked up a first edition Catch-22, complete with dust cover in “very good” condition two years ago in a church run thrift store.
That one’s a keeper, not even sure what it’s worth and I won’t even look it up.
I’ve also got a 1st edition Anthony Burgess which I previously told Arkady about; A Clockwork Orange. Nice.
You know what a high school grad gets from me? A fucking handshake, that’s what. Since when did graduating from high school become an accomplishment? Otherwise what does it take to graduate from high school these days, half a brain and an ability to not blow your brains out from wasting 7 hours a day listening to idiots? Do we give people money for getting out of prison???
I agree. First make sure he can write two grammatically correct coherent paragraphs.
Wow, I can’t beleive you guys are soo hard-nosed about giving graduation gifts.
Sure, I guess if this kid comes from a wealthy family – maybe get him a gift and not cash
but geez graduating HS is a milestone last time I checked – I guess many of you don’t remember that far back 😉

Another great gift idea for the high school graduate: Name and number of your nearest Navy recruiter.
