  1. Yossarian – the very sight of the name made him shudder. There were so many esses in it. It just had to be subversive. It was like the word subversive itself. It was like seditious and insidious too, and like socialist, suspicious, fascist and Communist.

  2. “”ability to not blow your brains out from wasting 7 hours a day listening to idiots” – that is important survival skill to learn to succeed in work-a-day world.”

Not really Pete. My workplace isn’t unionized.

  3. “I picked up a first edition Catch-22, complete with dust cover in “very good” condition two years ago in a church run thrift store.”

sweeet… since you don’t want to know, I won’t tell you, but a looot.

I might have to start attending church after all…

  4. Geez, you guys are ruthless.
Sure the kid is going to have his tuition /room & board/meals/transportation, etc. paid for by Mommy and Daddy…but my goodness, everyone likes getting a gift.

If you want to argue against giving gifts, then why do it for Birthdays. Is it really that much a rite of passage to be one year older?

Gosh, I don’t need anything in my life that I can’t go out and get for myself, but I still like getting a gift, regardless of what it is or how much someone spent on it. i appreciate that someone thought of me to get me something.

  5. lol,
now you guys have made me change my mind,
    here’s a new revised list of high school graduation gifts;

    – A pack of smokes and a copy of On The Road.

    – A Gap Anorak

    – A sleeping bag and a guide to State Parks

    – A Burger King $10 gift card

    – A subway map and a $5 dollar Metrocard

  6. “I agree. First make sure he can write two grammatically correct coherent paragraphs.”

Ahem. OK, I fired off a quick rant and we don’t have a “modify” button over here. I’m not a high school graduate, so what do I know.

  7. “I picked up a first edition Catch-22, complete with dust cover in “very good” condition two years ago in a church run thrift store.”

    Ok, THAT impresses me!

Catch-22 = My favourite book of all time.

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane, he had to fly them. If he flew them, he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to, he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.
