I guess I’ve known a few genius lawyers, but none of them are practicing law any more. At least I think they were geniuses but all I really knew is that they were smarter than I am, and it’s impossible to judge the intelligence of someone who is smarter than you other than to point out that they’re smarter than you. And I’m totally sub-genius now (alcohol intake, got hit in the head pretty hard a few times, spend all day on brownstoner). One guy I knew was an overweight former classics professor who went to Yale law and lived a few blocks from me in Fort Greene back in 2001-2002 and played poker with me and some other guys every week. Nauseatingly smart and knowledgeable. He quit the law and went back to the midwest to sit in a basement somewhere and translate ancient Greek texts. He probably weighs 500 pounds and hasn’t left his house in years. I tried to stop by and visit him when I was driving cross-country but he said he had plans, and by plans I think he meant agoraphobia.

I’m sure if there were hoards of shootings and rapes whenever the weather turned warm in Williamsburg it would get covered. But alas, once the weather turns warm us North Brooklynites just ride bikes and drink expensive iced coffee.
