  1. lechacal — I also never got an allowance. It actually didn’t make sense to me when I was a kid when i heard about other kids’ allowances.

I also collected the eggs and fed the sheep (no payment… if I wanted breakfast, I collected the eggs and fed the animals). It was also fun. I cleaned my room (no payment… just avoiding my mother’s wrath).

The only cash I ever saw was from specific work. I folded boxes at my uncles chocolate factory (real child labor I guess… though it was my idea and I didn’t have a quota like the *actual* employees folding boxes), I made really awesome wreaths at Christmas and sold them (chicken wire donut at the center — my design, no need for wire — and collecting/cutting piles and piles of pine and cedar branches from the woods), my sister and I had several lemonade stands over the years…. and lots of other ventures.

  2. “I wonder what he’d do to a couple of young kids with a lemonade stand on the sidewalk???”

Spill their lemonade and crumble their cookies, no doubt.

I patronized a lemonade stand next to Met Food just the other day. And I’m fairly certain the 8-year-old barista charged me tax. AND, I put money in her tip jar because she even had a water bowl in front of the stand for CDog . . . who prolly would’ve escaped to search for water otherwise and then I would’ve had to plaster BoCoCa with “Lost CDog” posters.

  3. “This warrants a second Gay Of The Day Award.”

Yeah well if you saw a picture of me in my circus days you might hand out a third one. One word for you: tights.

  4. My first job was working for a neighborhood butcher. My second job was working as a “messenger boy” (that’s what it used to be called) for a messenger service that was located in the basement of Grand Central Station. One of our top clients was the Daily News. One of the jobs I had was to pick up the copy from ad agencies that specialized in porn and deliver to the News. At that time, the major newspapers still ran advertising for porn theaters.

  5. I got some city patronage job when I was about 14 or 15. We painted the roofs of the little weather structures they erected on Albany Municipal Gold Course.
