I think my brothers and I got an allowance maybe a total of 10 times…each time about 5 bucks. Whenever we said we wanted something, my father’s reply was “What you want is a job.” We quickly got a paper route.
I had various jobs from the age of 13 when I got my working papers, till I was 18 and pretty much had a full time retail job. I worked in two ‘way too far ahead of their time’ gourmet prepared food stores, Haagen Daz, tons and tons of babysitting, summers as a mother’s helper [4], a health food store, bagel store, international import export office filing, a synagogue doing typing. Not to mention odd jobs people might hire me for like gardening or clearing out a basement.
Just bought a can of soda on a whim. IT TASTES LIKE CRAP! I think to myself…now I haven’t had this particular soda in years, but I honestly don’t recall it tasting so bad. I look at the can…the “drink by” date is MAY 2008!!! LOUSY BODEGA F@CKERS!
I got a quarter allowance until age 10, but we had significant chores that had to be done to get that. Including dinner dishes, house cleaning, sweeping or shoveling the front of the house and raking the yard. Then it went up to 50 cents until high school when my dad gave me $50 per month clothing allowance [$600/yr.] and $25/month for everything else. That was it. When I turned 18, that stopped.
I had a paper route as well. the Hagertys and the Goldbergs were the best tippers.
I’ve been a working girl since I was 13.
