Rob, I’m time challenged this am, but not enough to take a peak, ok, and my short response (like Arkady) you have 1 and 2 in spades, you don’t need the money, and passion, well I think you have it. And if it is not obvious, I am a major fan of yours. More on the passion thing later……
Rob, I hear you, but ET is right. You need to find your passion, and concentrate on it anyway you can. If, for example, you love working with dogs, especially pit bulls, you could build a business or a career around that. So many people fear and hate pits, so finding a way to show the world what great dogs they can be could make you a stand out in whatever it is you choose to do with it. If that’s not it, there must be something else.
Even if you can’t act on it now, being prepared, as ET said her mentor taught her, takes time and effort, and can be a good way to take your thoughts away from being depressed about your state. Write a business plan, read books on the subject, etc.
I’m reinventing myself, as well, and I’m in my 50’s. I loved what I was doing before, the home furnishings industry, but the jobs are gone, and my freelancing in that industry has dried up as well. I’ve always had a love of history and a love for renovation and architecture, and who knew it would lead to a couple of columns in a very popular blog? Who knows where it will lead after or during this? I’m open to all opportunities. I’ve met some great people, and actually have “fans” who come up to me in the strangest places to ask if I’m MM, and tell me they love my work. It’s very gratifying.
It ain’t paying the mortgage, but I’m working on making my little niche writing a success, however I can. I’m working on a few things. It can be very depressing, as I’m still in deep financial poo, and I’ve been seriously depressed for a while. If I had insurance, I would have gone to see someone, it was getting that bad. I’m just now emerging from that cave now. My work and friendships on this site have truly been a lifesaver, and were sometimes the only thing that I had any interest in. All my attempts at getting employment have gotten nowhere, and the one nibble I had, that had gotten past the send the resume into the ether stage, I just got a rejection for this morning. Well, back to the drawing board. This week I had a good 3 day gig that paid well, so that’s a blessing, but it’s hard out there.
Long story long, life is a struggle, and our plans don’t always come out the way we want. But we find what we love, find those who will support us with their friendship, and encouragement, and love, and keep on keeping on. I truly believe I will succeed, somehow, somewhere, and you will too.

Jessi, THIS is a long MM piece.
Jeez, ET, you really can fit a lot into both of your pie-holes.
Is it lunch time? I’m H U N G R Y!
Maybe I’ll have breakfast again now….and then lunch in 2 hours.
And the deli on the corner of Fulton and Clinton has recently expanded their menu to include paninis and “fresh” salads.
not to mention the post’s title says the building is “scary” :-/

They might… A lot of places from Park Slope deliver to me (around the corner from Fulton Thai), so similarly-distanced.
Check out “Just Taste It”– they can be a bit uneven, but their desserts and collards are amazing.
no offense, but some of the new stringers are TERRIBLE with their posts and neighborhood coverage… the newest one.. on the pizza place
“which looks like a mental hospital from the outside”
i mean huh!? why? cuz there’s lots of windows and bricks? jeez
