  1. cmu, organic beef does not taste any better than non-organic grain-fed aged beef.

Besides, i wasn’t originally tak=ling about meats. i was simply pointing out the differences in acreage between organic and non-organic wheat, corn and soybeans.

I let all of you read all of the additional stuff into the original post, which inevitably always happens.

  2. Mopar,
When Walmart and other large store chains started carrying “organic” foods that’s when I began wondering:where exactly is this stuff coming from and how can consumers be sure of the product that they are getting?? Even if the original intent is to deliver honestly organic produce there are so many transactions along the path from farm to consumer that it seems logical that there would be some sort of corruption involved since there is motive due to increased demand and therefore profit. It’s only after years of acceptance that someone would begin to question this and find out how long we’d all been duped. Why is it that I will often see produce in the store that is labelled organic and is next to non-organic produce and they look identical. Makes me wonder….

  3. OMG, DIBS, organic produce (argula, strawberries, tomatoes) is so much better than regular. Nothing to do with the fact that it’s organic. Everything to do with the fact that is is produced by small growers in conditions closer to what you would do in your own backyard, and is generally ripened on the vine longer and delivered fresher/closer to market. It’s boutique produce.

  4. aaah DIBS, stirring up the shit again, I see. Wish I had read all this earlier…here goes:

It’s irrelevant that organic (supposedly) yields less (there’s some debate on that anyway;) there’s plenty of land and plenty of food around. As a nation, we spend less on food than most; that is not necessarily a good thing; people can eat plenty healthily by choosing non-procssed foods and less red meat, just to name a few things.

Organic produce (and meat) most defintely does taste better! I have no idea where you’re getting your worse-tasting organic foods!

Even if you don’t subscribe to the scares about hormones (linked to cancer), antibiotics (promotes drug-resistance), genetic crap (jury;s out), over-processing (obesity) and corn-starch-stuffing (obesity), there’s a moral dimension to buying good food. And most of us can afford to do so.

Finally, I think anyone who’s not appalled about the depravity that is factory-farming needs a soul transplant. See Food Inc. Read Omnivore’s Dilemma. How can you not be horrified at the way animals are treated in CAFE’s in the name of increased production and decreased costs?
