M4L – ok WOW! two rolexes is an insane gift to have to give! wow – I read somewhere that The South Korean Governement was starting to put a cap on what people spend and give as the wedding cutlure is HUGE there. (ps I know you aren’t Korean.. -just sayin)
Your stories have got me reminiscing! Two stories from my wedding (I’m fast approaching my 30th wedding anniversary):
-I invited one of my grad school colleagues to my wedding reception. He was from deep Nebraska, and he had never seen a NY wedding before, and was completely unprepared. He gave us a $10 gift. My father wouldn’t forgive me for inviting him (sample quote: why did you invite that cheap SOB to the wedding?). As much as I tried to explain to him that he was accustomed to lavish NYC weddings, he couldn’t forgive him.
-Speaking of post-wedding hijinks: the catering hall was close to my parent’s house, and I had an afternoon reception. After the reception, my folks invited everybody to their house for more drinks. One of my cousins, who was wild at the time, decided to take a shower with his girlfriend!! It was the family scandal of the century!!
Pete, family gets more than friends unless that’s legit super best friend. friends get $250/hc from me. family (cousins) gets $500 and if real good cousin, $1k. 1 cousin that I’m waiting for him to get married is probably going to get a pair of rolexes from me – owe his parents a ton. good thing is I’ve been saving up for his wedding gift since 8 yrs ago
gemini,
lol, you’re experience sounds familiar too,
was it in the tri-state area?
I’ve never heard of giving money at a funeral. Clearly, NOT a Jewish tradition.
Hey Chicken!!

dibs,
that sounds awesome with a 9 piece orchestra!
and noki with the new orleans jazz, wow.
we opted for the dj because the money saved
was used for the honeymoon.
nothing like a live band though to keep people
on their feet.
“if it’s the annoying smart alek
nephew go by the minimum,
if it’s the cool one who actually
called you one time in 1998,
then add a bit more.”
So true to way more than weddings, that.

In my family (eastern european jews) cash is/was definitely the thing to do give.
