Well DUH! My daughter went to an elementary school in Chinatown and goes to a middle school nestled among the projects in southeastern Chinatown/Lower East Side–just north of the projects to the north of the Brooklyn Bridge. We know plenty of Chinese kids who live in hovels or in the projects and are definitely gang fodder, alas.
But there are not a whole lot of Asians at Boys and Girls:
Ethnicity American Indian 23 1.01%
Asian / Pac. Isl 17 0.75%
Hispanic 167 7.36%
Black 2,025 89.21%
White 16 0.70%
Not Reported 22 0.97%
We have looked at several high quality schools in the neighborhood over the years (e.g., PS11 back in 2000 when we were looking at elementary schools, MS113 4 years ago, Benjamin Banneker High School last year). My daughter didn’t want to be an “only”–the only or almost the only Chinese kid, and I respect that. She also didn’t want to be in a small minority among white students, and didn’t like IS289 in Battery Park City or Eleanor Roosevelt High School on the Upper East Side because they were too white. (She’s gone to District 2 schools so she was eligible to apply to Elro since District 2 includes Battery Park City, Chinatown, and the Upper East Side.)
Noki- I think “generalization” doesn’t begin to cover that comment. I would start with snarky. Just wish rob would stop hemorrhaging at the mouth for the rest of the day.
Biff- not only will the 4 take you up to Woodlawn, but also Van COrtlandt Park. They used to have a stable and a pony ride ring for kids- don’t know if they are still there. But the area is lovely for walking and Amalgamated is a beautiful old Apartment complex. My sister lives there.
If you take the F to the last stop, the Stillwell ave. station is work the extra time. Its got glass murals designed by Robert Wilson of Einstein on the Beach fame. Its like a subway Cathedral. The original Nathans care to chance it)is across the street, and Keyspan Park a block down.(if you
Legion – Surely Roy Innis is a lot older than you! I think he’s older than I am.
A divorced friend of mine has 3 half-Asian kids – I’ve told her the best thing her ex did was give them an Irish surname – how many of those are applying to elite schools?

Biffy – If you opened as a Canadian Consulate you wouldn’t have to comply w/ local liquor laws & taxes – it’d be a foreign enclave!
Who is “Gen-Y” ??
