  1. cmu, I had no idea that kids are allowed to ride on the sidewalks. Good to know! Mine are used to riding around Cadman Plaza (like your’s, they pretty much learned overnight around 4 or 5 year’s old). I’m definitely apprehensive about them riding on the streets and will be for a few years. I’ll likely start with the quieter streets and see if we can make it up to Prospect Park that way.

And if the Brooklyn Bridge Park is ever finished, there is supposed to be a bike path, which would be incredibly handy. Then again, if and when it’s finally built, I might have Grand Champs by then to take for a ride.

  2. cmu, you can email me at biffchampion at yahoo dot com and I can (try to remember to) send an email to you if and when any of these outings occurs. Make up a unique email address for Brownstoner buddies if you don’t want to use a current one.

  3. Biff: What’s with the simpatico today!? YES on biking, I taught D at 6+. He was an expert scooter-er (-ist?) so I knew his balance was great. I finally just let go the bike, him screaming and he magically was riding. We go around the park a lot, but I suspect, now he’s a tween, that might decline.

Hmmm…streets…I’ve let him ride on 3rd with its separated lane, but a little apprehensive about other streets, he’s still a little spacey (but cautious.) Otoh, he’s legally allowed to ride sidewalks until 16.

  4. “Is a Jewish Eurasian kid approximately the academic equivalent of an Asian kid? ”

Hmmm, I guess the D has little to worry about if so…1/4 Jewish, 1/4 Irish and 1/2 Indian…

Hey…if you guys are serious about the Gov Isl+kids trip, I’m on! But I don’t have time to read the OT much anymore (how do you guys do it?..I’m jealous)…so could you post it in the Forum if it happens?

  5. If we’re going down Van Brunt St, we can make a 1/2-block side trip down Van Dyke St. to show folks where I was born. Then, on Van Brunt St., we can go into my dad’s VFW at Sullivan Street. It has a public bar, and this is where the old-timers hang out. We’ll probably get our asses kicked in, but it would be a vintage Brooklyn experience.

    benson,

that sounds like a passage from a Hubert Selby novel,
getting our collective asses kicked by Red Hook old-timers.
    i’ll bring the camera!

  6. cmu, that’s great. I’m looking forward to starting to ride bikes with The Champs once I feel totally comfortable with the idea of them riding on the streets in the bike lanes. Any idea what the suggested age is for kids to do that? (I post this with the full expectation of enduring some serious anti-cyclist banter).
