  1. Ps = whoever said we should keep typing must be realllly old

kids today can type SUPER DUPER fast b/c of texting
hell I never took typing and can type rings around my mother who did. Typing only gets better through practice

  2. Rob:
True – I guess I was speaking from experience. I was a remedial math student, always getting D’s through high School and actually received an F in college in Algebra!
however there were so many other classes I excelled in
the funny thing is – I love finance, I love working on all my artist budgets and trying to save money.
I agree, our kids do need math and science, but maybe the right kids need to be pushed into those fields when they express the desire, instead of a kid who’s great in math is then off to med school when they get outta college…

Tyburg – agreed! why aren’t kids in school for most of the day? Not like the kids have to leave during the day to help tend the farm.
I seriously think ethics has to be a class taught to kids from 10 on up -we have lost sight on how to treat others and how to make judgement calls
I also think learning money and finance is super important
    so is health and nutrition

Slopefarm: and spelling was one of my favorite classes believe or not

  3. Just stopped in to say hi while I was checking out today’s real estate porn. Home sick today so I’m supposed to be resting and don’t want to be *THWACKED* by Cobble when she catches me in the OT.

It is a sign of overcrowding….some would say is because you don’t have a job that pays enough in taxes to support a better school system so it is all your fault.

LOL x 500… no pete, the real reason is cuz most of those dumbass kids are on the 5 and 6 year program.

  5. Call me crazy… but I think the required curriculum should include EVERYTHING that was mentioned above… and more! If kids were actually in school for the whole day (and during waking hours; not 7:00am), they could learn and be exposed to all of area of knowledge. Schools should be operating from 9:00 to 6:00 or 7:00, not 6:30 to 1:00.

High school curriculum (9-12) should DEFINITELY include:

Math — through pre-calculus and including statistics.
English — 4 years of literature and WRITING
Science — chemistry, biology, physics, (archaeology perhaps)
History/Gov’t — 4 years. American, World, etc etc.
Geography — I’d like someone under 18 to be able to find China on a map for chrissake!
Art and/or Music — at least a couple years (creating and studying)
Gym — I hated it, but we’re just getting fatter.
    Personal Economics / Home Economics

I’d also like to see subjects like psychology, philosophy, sociology, classics, religion (western and eastern) available. Electives or part of the curriculum.

Anything short of this and these kids are NOT ready for college-level work and do not have the BASIC tools needed to be successful in our society… and will be a burden on us rather than creating the future economy and society.

  6. quote:
math classes every year in HS wasting 45 mins in Trig getting D’s and bringing their average down when they could be in a computer class learning software developemen

LOL.. kids who get D’s in trig will never make it into any real software development programs. dont most computer studies require advanced math classes? i mean, i get what you mean, but i still think kids need more of a focus on science and math. we are one of the dumbest peoples on planet Earth these days who have to important smart people from other countries! i think it’s time we started growing some of our own smart people as well.

  7. oh wow, speaking of, they just put an update today to the novo egg dog run drama on gothamist!!!!

Dog Egging Victims Plot Their Next Move

Dog owners are speaking out against the egger who—in lieu of a noise complaint—has been bombing canines from a Park Slope condominium. At least three egg drops have occurred since December, prompting one patron of the dog run in J.J. Byrne Park to plan a counter-attack: “We should come out here with frozen milk bones and retaliate!” joked Annie Norman, who fears for her three-year-old Boxer, Chester. Others dispute whether the mad egger’s anger is even justified.

Fourth Avenue’s Novo Condominiums are backed right up against the dog-run that actually pre-dates the apartments. Not only did condo dwellers know what they were in for when they moved in, but a sign clearly states that the run is open until 10 p.m. (At least two of the eggings occurred earlier in the evening, closer to 8 p.m.) Noise equal to or exceeding the dogs’ barking comes from a neighboring skate park where teens do kick flips and k-grinds ’til all hours, according to the Brooklyn Paper, so why not target them? “If you move into an apartment facing the park, get over it!” said Caitlin Quinn, whose canine companion is a nine-month-old Great Dane. “If it’s the noise, don’t move by the park!”

The culprit has yet to be identified, though the condominium board put up fliers and notified the police. So far the owners are taking the attacks in stride: “We’re in Park Slope, so at least you know they’re organic eggs,” said Norman.

  8. I would guess Midwood is a very popular school and they are on some split time session to fit more kids. I believe the amount of class time is regulated by state…so they are probably in class just as long as anywhere else.
Back in the dark ages when I was in H.S (probably b4 you were born)…we had the same thing at my school for part of the time I was there.
It is a sign of overcrowding….some would say is because you don’t have a job that pays enough in taxes to support a better school system so it is all your fault.
