Yes, benson, the two works share Red Hook and the docks. I believe OTW depicts Red Hook but was filmed in Hoboken. Yes, the corruption was real notorious. I believe there is recent research that suggests that an earlier draft of the script had the informant story in place before Kazan was called to testify. Most of the characters were based on real individuals, including the priest. The historical question that connects the movie to the McCarthy era is whether informing on corruption on the docks was equivalent to naming the names of individuals in hollywood who may have at one time attended CP meetings years, or decades earlier. But the new research suggests that OTW, rather than being Kazan’s post-hoc justification for testifying, may have actually influenced his decision to do so. But the rift testifying caused between Kazan and Miller was real.
And I agree that the movie is a classic and stands on its own apart from this history. But the history is interesting.
Dill pickle?? Woah….I NEED that.
Please excuse me while my mind freaking blows!
Dill pickle seasoning? Is that a Canadian thing?
“Are you really that out of it?”
THL, that wasn’t meant for you!!
It was meant for you-know-who…

“Are you really that out of it?”
Yes. And Old Fashioned.
Salt and Butter only. Thank you very much.
Ah, legion- of course no specifics, waaaaaay too general and really, how does that define what you think small government is? 😉
And really? An audible gasp? You wouldn’t be putting your opposition party spin on that, would you? 🙂
Biff- yes, come clean. I’m a popcorn fan but a purist. Butter and salt.
“Are you really that out of it?”
Yes, yes I am. Thanks for sharing though.
“I need to know what toppings you’re using though I may need to try them.”
THL, I’m partial to the the white cheddar and dill pickle seasonings. And ketchup too.
“Yes, ET, I’m wondering what Biff puts on his popcorn as well.”
Hope it doesn’t come from the popcorn trick.
