My sister, a very senior person at her firm, once asked a junior associate to take notes during a meeting; he refused – over office email. She told him that wasn’t negotiable, but to his face.
Best boss I ever had was a woman. When in doubt, I copy her – works every time.
My two current potential love interests both make more than I do and are smarter than me. I went out with one and afterwards told my mother, “She’s too good for me.” It made me question the choices I’d made in life!
The other has an arty streak and isn’t so impressed by Type A people, so there’s more potential there.
I stopped dead. I then asked the branch manager to please immediately remove him from the room. Once he’d left I said to the BM to please bring him into his office immediately following the meeting. I said it in front of everyone so they knew I wasn’t going to allow that to happen. I then went back to the topic.
After the meeting I called a senior HR person and conference both the BM and the guy in and asked the HR person to take down a formal as to what had transpired. I then asked the BM if my recounting of the incident was accurate. He agreed I then addressed the guy stating that I would be following up with him at a later time to determine what the consequences would be for his outburst. I figured let the fucker stew for a bit. I then asked him to leave and shared a few choice words with the BM in front of HR as to how I would appreciate him advising his staff that that behavior will in no way be tolerated and that should it happen again I’d hold him just as responsible as the person who did it.
My best story happened at Disney. Client made me use the local crew & rental equipment – I usually brought my own from NJ. Huge set-up for Hardy’s. Computer was broken. The head of the crew went to the client & told him that “the little lady just doesn’t know the computer.” The neat thing was that the client knew I’d written the manual for the unit for the manufacturer – one reason he’d hired me. Had 2 new machines helicoptered from Atlanta & tech company had to pick up the tab.
“And I recall a female attorney telling me a story about how one of the partners had a talk with her about her “future” and advised that if wanted to see herself grow at the firm that he would suggest that she does not have children for the next 10 years or so. BS if you ask me but this what we are dealing with.”
LFW, I don’t think it’s BS. If you aren’t going to be as commited to your job as someone else, then you shouldn’t be treated as an equal. Can’t have cake and eat, too. Granted, there are some super women out there, but I think you’d have to prove yourself to be one.
“Listen be a doll and relax with those deadlines, you’re not winning any pals down here being such a stickler”. WTF? I could here a bunch of the guys chuckling when he said it too.
You needed to put him in his place right then and there.
Kinda Joan Crawfordish: “Don’t fuck with me fellas.”
