FWIW:
am 34 and have a BA in poli-sci, but am interested in becoming a Physician’s Asst. so I would have to pretty much start from scratch at the undergrad level and then fast-trak it along at the Graduate level…

if you’re interested in a medical career (they are recession proof for the most part)consider the following which don’t take as long as others and have a good growth/income potential;
Radiation technologist (x-ray tech) short training, good money
Radiation therapy (very good money)
Medical technologist (4th year college specialized training, your existing credits may apply)
Pathologist Assistant (very good money) a bit boring though.
jessi, PAs are at pretty bad situation right now. My mom’s hospital in the bronx just got rid of 85% of their PAs and replaced them with slaving Medical students that will do the work and not union and get paid half as much. Plenty of them out there right now to fill the spots. Not sure of PA future positions.
Gem,
any medical area (except general practice MD) will have a good growth in opportunities. Although think about Nurse Practitioner vs PA. NPs can run independent clinics as long as they have a sponsor MD. If I remember correctly, PAs still have to have cosigners for all their charts. Theyused to have limitations on what they could prescribe as well (i.e. controlled substances)…that may have changed. But NPs are pushing for total independence from MDs with trying to change NYS licensing/practice act. Other states NPs can function independently without sponsor MD. Insurers love NPs because they can pay much less for similar service as MD. However, the areas in most need are generally not urban areas 🙁
“ET, you have untold depth.”
Must resist making randy comment.

Gem, so long as the hubby can float you while you’re in school, I don’t see why not. You will certainly be able to find a job as a PA.
