  1. Joe, last night I had a meeting at my nonprofit, I hardly said a word and when I did, people’s eyes glazed over. Then this morning I presented at a roundtable at work and the facilitator came over beforehand to write down some quotes from me to use, she liked them so much. then I’m the resident jerk in person at PLUSA gatherings. Go figure!

    Don’t sell yourself short IJ.

  2. “I doubt there’s a single really good gynecologist in NYC who takes any insurance – not even Medicare or Medicaid. At least, in 46 years I’ve never met one.”

I have to say I’m doubtful, too.

I’ll tell you a story that rocked my world last year. Not a great situation. Changes nothing in my life, but it was something that you’d think a gyno of THIRTY YEARS might have noticed before a year ago.

  3. No- I understand that, denton. I just don’t see people’s lives being so blithely defined in dollars and cents. And I have my reasons to feel that way. If a doctor is strictly a businessman, fine. Let’s not hear anything about compassion, human life and the Hippocratic oath. Call it what it is. Chuck E. Cheez is a business too.

Sure cops and firefighters can go into business after they leave their departments. But by and large they are still the same people who will run to help someone or go into burning buildings. At least 3 FDNY retirees died on 9-11 running to help.

  4. “Since when does the amount of money you lay out for school make you more worthy than someone willing to lay their life on the line for others?”

It’s a free market. Everyone has career choices. I’m glad we have cops and firemen but I also know they chose these careers. Press gangs are long gone.

  5. Arkady, that’s part of the whole problem here. Everybody wants access to the ‘best’ treatment when they are ill yet the ‘best’ professional can’t treat every patient.

I’m fully aware that if I come down with liver disease tom’w that I will not have the same choices Steve Jobs did. And that’s ok too as long as I have some choices.

Yup, rationing really does exist. Now why won’t Republicans admit it?

  6. dibs- so? I think a person’s life is worth something to, you know. Since when does the amount of money you lay out for school make you more worthy than someone willing to lay their life on the line for others?
