THL, it amazes me how a house can go for 10K. Aren’t materials alone worth more these days??????
How much would it cost me to buy a house for 10K in Detroit and move it whole to poconos?? I can probably get a nice piece of land there for about 20K and have myself a nice summer home.
Yes DH, it is quite upsetting to see people in the US living in squalor, considering the billions this gov’t wastes on frivilous programs.
Go visit an Indian reservation (I did. Either in Nevada or New Mexico, I forget), you’ll see the same level of poverty.
There’s poverty right here in our own backyards, Pennsylvania, NJ and parts of LI….oh, and let’s not forget the ones in our own city that sleep in shelters and line up for food.
“I think it boils down to immigrants seeing too much opportunity here (as M4L once put it) and American born not seeing how the rest of the world lives (even though ENY seen it being a travel writer at some point in his life).”
My wife is from another country Kens. I’ve heard this line before from her and others (ALL of my family on both sides is originally from the Caribbean). I’ve also traveled widely, as you note. And I’ve learned one thing: just about EVERY country has examples of extreme poverty and the U.S. version is no “better” than the versions elsewhere. Yes, we have much more opportunity here in the U.S. than in other countries, but there are many, many VERY poor people RIGHT HERE in this country, regardless of our higher overall standard of living.
Look at today’s Post cover. That’s a hole in one.lol.
ENY,
Attempting to discredit me by pawning me off on the right wing crew will do nothing to further your polemic.
Now, if you think I am not addressing the varying degrees of poverty in America. My response is; not at all.
I am giving you figures on what we as a society have deemed to define as “poverty” level, the conclusions to be drawn from the fact that most who are living below the poverty line in america still have homes, food and educational opportunities…are left to the reader.
You were born here,
you had a free education
you had access to food’
you had access to shelter
you have a good life, from what I have read.
Why do you think everyone else has it so bad?
or for that matter that everyone else is entitled to success?
and again, yes I have seen the homeless. I’ve live here all my life.
“The Jews did kill Christ. He was Jewish” — Is Jewish on Jewish crime still a problem today? Discuss.
“The Welsh invented meatballs.”
I think you mean the Welsh are meatballs.

The Jews did kill Christ. He was Jewish. I don’t get what this has to do with poverty or bike lanes in Williamsburg.
