I think smoke does flow through the vents. I’ve heard of such complaints before. There is a case going (may be done by now) in Manhattan claiming that their neighbor’s smoking is causing their apt. to be un-inhabitable. It will be interesting to see the outcome of that case.
I’m with Bxgrl on this. It’s annoying, dangerous even health wise but smoking is NOT illegal.
I’d post one of those typical knee jerk reactions and say buy a house but I lived in a 3 family house and my bedroom was on the top floor back of the house. My neighbors a VERY large ethnic family used to by day sit in the back yard preparing scaling & de-boning fish and leaving it to cure it in the sun and by night play cards drinking and smoking till 3-4 a.m. This was from about May till November.
Running the a/c mitigated the noise but only served to pull the smoke and fish stink into my bedroom.
If it can be proven that second hand smoke can be delivered through vents and ultimately cause cancer to those living in other apartments, you can bet that it will ultimately be banned. It could be analagous to having a radon machine in your apartment.
Yeah, I do snaps. I’ve grown up in NYC apartment projects and lived to tell about it. But I draw the line at criminalizing people in their own homes. For a legal substance. I get the smoke free thing- I hated being in restaurants and bars full of cigarette smoke. But we live in an urban environment- there is no way to completely mitigate everything from our neighbors. At some point we can embrace being a police state of nosy neighbors or we find ways to enable us to all deal with it fairly, for everyone.
DH- no. Sorry. Smokers should pay for it. On the other hand I won’t let my cat pee outside your door 🙂
I don’t know Bxgrl. Seems to me that subjecting non-smokers to lungfulls of second hand smoke in their own homes day in day out is quite a different thing from detesting the smell of cabbage and requiring one to smell it while one cooks it, or hating the view of one’s curtains because the color or texture is indefensible…
if anyone harassed me about smoking in MY apt I’d make them a big batch of Durian Stew.

Not ideal neighbors.

air purifying systems use a bunch of electricity. I used to run one in my apt and it would increase my monthly bill by about 30 bucks
