I have to go out, but would love to continue this Dinkins fest later.
Amazing how the point of view changes depending on who’s viewing.
I think the “liesure class” remark is totally out of line, btw. And being driven out of business, as indefensible, and unfair as it is, is a far cry from being driven into the highway to die. I would think that being dead is much worse than being ruined.
I do agree that the draft riots during the Civil War were the worst racial incidents this city ever had.
Rob, it was much more complicated than that. If no one explains, we can discuss in about an hour.
“saying they couldn’t find our address in their system”
Someone with a southern accent repeatedly told me my address “wasn’t in their system” and kept trying to tell me I lived somewhere else.
I said, “no, you are talking about Williamsburg — I live in Park Slope”.
Further conversation revealed that the strange terms “Williamsburg” and “Park Slope” meant nothing to her.
And the worst part was every time I called, whoever I ended up talking to had to go through their little “script” before they would even LISTEN to me for 1 second.
I really wanted to bludgeon “Jose” who kept responding to my comments that had nothing to do with whether or not I had INTERNET CONNECTIVITY with assurances that my modem was working fine. “Jose” also took down my phone number, promised to escalate the issue to his superior, swore that someone would call me back later that day, and disappeared from my life forever.
I find I don’t miss him, but I regret not being able to hurt him in some way.
It seems my interactions with Time Warner have poisoned my soul.
I think someone has to have some pretty screwed up ideas of what “worst” is- why don’t you ask the families of Michael Griffiths and Yusef Hawkins, benson? May I also be offensive enough to point out that both of them were killed in heavily Italian-American neighborhoods, by Italian-Americans (and Irish-American, in Howard Beach). Yet you think a Black boycott of Koreans- where no one died- was worse. Go figure. I would say you are either in serious denial or you suffer from a problem of perception.
Benson- Thanks alot. Did you have to mention Ruth Messinger before lunch….now I am also recalling Margaret Hamilton’s most well known role….
That boycott was officially permitted harrassment led by a well known convict who was a violent and dangerous radical. It is a mark on Dinkins failed record that can never be justified or explained away. He will NEVER live it down. The fact that the repeated harrassment by the convicted radical and his seemingly “liesure class” followers, who showed up day after day to protest, I guees due to independent wealth/income of some kind??, was condoned by Dinkins led to the ruination of a hardworking, taxpaying immigrant & his family.
Sorry about your grandma, Snappy. May she rest in peace.
“we talked about launching a new kickball (or was it dodgeball?) League in McCarren Park and fielding a Brownstoner team (subject to Mr. B’s blessing of course). Instead of t-shirts or hoodies, DH suggested hipster flannel shirts with our log-in names (or abbreviations) embroidered on the back.”
Ummm…..kickball?? Hipster fannel shirts with log in names???? Mr. B’s blessing??!?!
Yeah, I don’t see myself at any Brownstoner gatherings anytime soon.
“One more stupid comment in the “Copter Rage in Brooklyn Heights”, and I’m going on a tirade!!!”
I’ll see what I can do…

Ok…heavy books it is. And thanks for the suggestions THL 🙂
Thanks ENY 🙂
Ah, here comes Bxgrl, ready to throw gas on the flames.
I’ve made my case in a non-inflammatory way above. Therefore, I’m not going to respond to your rant.
Just curious Bxgrl, why are you going after just me?? FSRG and Crescent Hill spoke up too.
Also, fyi, NONE of the people convicted in Howard Beach were Italian-Americans. Nice try to bait me, though. I’ll give you points for that.
I’m outta here.

Someone needs to update The Banality of Evil.

THIS IS NYC, NOISE IS EVERYWHERE.
