  1. etson- NYC needs teachers. You would be great at it.

Bxgrl, I think the genius of the Teaching Fellows program is that it attracts lots of ambitious young people with the promise of a career with benefits and a master’s degree at reduced cost. I’ve heard it’s eliminated the perennial shortage in teachers, but I could be wrong. The problem is that its target population is the population most likely to get frustrated and move on to other careers. But never mind, there are more ambitious young people out there to fill the pipeline. What NYC needs to do is *retain* the best of its young teachers. In this, the DOE fails miserably. Since I started teaching in 2000, my department of 25 has seen 42 teachers come and go – and I’m at a very good school!

  2. there’s only one beach for me: Riis Park, If you walk far enough away from the main kiosk you get the odd person fishing, running their dog, nude bathing, smoking weed — in other words, it’s very laid back, uncrowded and generally unmonitored. But you really do kind of need a car to get there…

  3. etson,

I think a lot of people have been feeling similarly.I was actually discussing this with a bunch of my friends a few weeks ago. Concesus (amongst a group of wine swilling women) was that the economy having people feeling trapped in their current situation. Everyone is scared that they can’t make any moves right now. So even if normally they’d be content in their current situation the feeling of not being able to move has everyone feeling shifty and unsettled. Does that make sense? Now sure if I’m explaining it properly. I’m not trying to imply that situation applies to you.

Anyhoo, I wish you the best and hope you find satisfaction in whatever you do now or next.

  4. CG_ups – really appreciate the offer – thanks! I have not bitten the bullet and left my current job yet but will follow up if I do so soon. I have your e-mail.

DIBS – Can you fill me in on the Butternut Market story? Thanks.

  5. Just becoming a teaching ain’t that easy… i’ve looked into it. New York State has some really odd rules about what degrees are “acceptable” for someone to become a teacher. i.e., you must have X to teach Y. While appropriate, of course, to some extent, they seem to be very non-flexible. But I could be wrong. I’d like to be wrong in this case.

Private schools seems to be the option — though the pay is crap, so I have to wait until I find my sugar mama before I become a teacher.

  6. Rob – if you have the whole day, take the ferry to Sandy Hook in NJ. Lovely boat trip and a great beach. Not sure of the logistics (they can probably be googled easily) but a friend of mine does it fairly often and loves it!

  7. Rob, you should come out for the Blondie concert next Thursday at Seabreeze park. It’s right on the beach pretty much and you can hang with me and DH while you’re there. Should be fun times.

Awesome thing about Brighton cafes is that you can get a cold beer on the boardwalk and they’ll put it in a coffee cup (same goes for hard liquor as well) so that you don’t get bothered by cops (come to think of it, they might only do that for Russians but that still rocks nevertheless).

Etson, upgrade that to a YES and come drink with us. How can you say no to a PLUSA bday bash?
